Dick Francis
short profile |           |
Dick Francis was a jockey for England's Queen Mum, then became a reporter, and
began writing mystery novels centered on the horseracing industry in England & Europe.
The success of his autobiography in 1957 led to a job as horse-racing correspondent for "The Sunday Express". During this time he began writing fiction, and published his first novel "Dead Cert" in 1962, a resounding success. He thereafter published a novel a year for 38 years (leaving his correspondent job in 1973), for a total of over 40 books. Late in life he lived part-time in England and part-time in Florida, USA.
Dick Francis is the only author to win the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Award for Best Novel three times: for "Forfeit" in 1970, "Whip Hand" in 1981, and "Come To Grief" in 1996. Also in 1996, he received the Grand Master Award, the highest honor bestowed by the M.W.A. In 1984, he was made an Officer of the British Empire, and in 2000 made Commander of the British Empire.
Around 2007, Dick Francis began working with his son Felix Francis, co-authoring four novels. Dick Francis died in February 2010 at age 89. Son Felix has since published several books on his own (see Continuation Section).
