William Gillette’s stageplay "Sherlock Holmes" [1899]
  | American stage actor William H. Gillette [1853-1937] wrote and produced and starred in the hit Broadway stageplay "Sherlock Holmes". The stageplay is subtitled 'The Strange Case of Miss Faulkner'; an agent of the royal family asks Holmes for help in retrieving letters written to a Miss Faulkner; the girl's sister was intending a ransom demand for the letters, but is being held captive by a couple in the employ of evil mastermind Prof. Moriarty. |

Sir  Arthur  Conan  Doyle [1859-1930]
Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 22 May 1859. He received a degree in medicine in 1881 at Edinburgh University, and became an eye specialist in Southsea. The practice was not very successful, so he began writing in hope of augmenting his income. His first story, "A Study In Scarlet", starred detective Sherlock Holmes, who was modeled in part after Doyle's mentor Dr. Joseph Bell of the Edinburgh Infirmary. After several rejections, the story was sold to a British publisher for £25, and 59 more Sherlock Holmes adventures followed. Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his defense of the British cause in the Boer War. After the deaths of a series of family members around the end of World War I, Doyle became an ardent Spiritualist and wrote several books on the subject. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died of a heart attack at home in Sussex on 7 July 1930, at age 71. |     |
