"There is a time to laugh and a time not to laugh, and this is not one of them."

"With me, surprises are rarely unexpected."

"Of course it won't be easy; nothing worthwhile ever is. That is why I have always failed where others have succeeded."

"Let me bring you up to speed . . . We know nothing. You are now up to speed."

"A woman is like an artichoke, you must work hard to get to her heart."

— Insp. Jacques Clouseau

History of The Films
The Pink Panther character began as part of the opening & closing credits for "The Pink Panther" 1963 feature film starring David Niven and Peter Sellers. The name derives from the movie's MacGuffin, a very large and very pink diamond jewel. Edwards asked animation studio Depatie-Freleng to design a pink-colored panther character for a logo, and was so pleased with the result that he asked them to animate the opening and closing credits. The rest as they say, is history. The cartoon panther is silent, in the tradition of "Tom & Jerry" et al.

The  Creators

writer-director Blake Edwards [1922-2010]
The script for "The Pink Panther" was written by Maurice Richlin and Blake Edwards as a caper comedy starring David Niven as gentleman thief 'The Phantom', with bumbling
Inspector Clouseau a secondary character. Haven't found clear details on the story origins or the changes that occurred during filming, but the Pink Panther movie title, the hilarious
portrayal by Sellers, and the addition of the cartoon credits had a lot to do with the movie's success. The second film, a stageplay adaptation with script troubles, was quickly
converted to a Clouseau tale directed by Edwards and starring Sellers.

animation studio DePatie-Freleng Enterprises [1963-81]
When Warner Brothers Animation shut down in 1963, two employees formed DePatie-Freleng and got a sweetheart deal to use the former animation building; at first they produced commercials and industrial cartoons, but their success with the Pink Panther credits boosted them into the big time. The pressure of producing cartoons for children's TV caused quality to drop, and D.F.E. Films was sold to Marvel Comics in 1981; Freleng went back to just-reopened Warner Brothers Animation and DePatie was hired to run the new/renamed Marvel Productions, Ltd. animation studio. Marvel sold its animation catalog to Saban in the 1990s, Saban was bought by Disney in 2001, and Disney bought Marvel Comics in 2009,
bringing most of the DePatie-Freleng product under Disney ownership.
