  | "The Adventures of Kathlyn" 13-chapter silent serial [Selig Polyscope / G.F.C. Dec 1913] Considered to be the first 'cliffhanger' serial; filmed in Chicago. During a newspaper circulation war, movie pioneer William Selig made a deal with the Chicago Tribune to release a two-reel serial chapter every two weeks which was then published in the Tribune; the novel by Harold MacGrath was published in January 1914 so as to be in stores during the serial's release. Helen is a clerk at a railroad who is either endangered by bad guys or heroically saves the railroad and its rolling stock and men. Filming took place at the Glendale, California railyards of the Southern Pacific Railroad, on the Sierra Railroad in Central California, and on the Santa Fe Railway in Las Vegas, New Mexico (episodes 21-25).
