  | "Spinoza and The Rise of Liberalism" [orig 1958, rev 1984] by Lewis S. Feuer
Transaction Publrs 9x6 pb [1987] for $24.95 Greenwood Press hardcover [1/84] out of print/used Author describes how Spinoza's philosophical & political ideas were influenced by his responses to the conflicts of his time; during the first period, Spinoza rejected the com-petitive capitalism of the Amsterdam Jews, and gave up his own business activities; in the second period, Spinoza sided with the Utopian groups of the day, but developed serious doubts about the practicality of such idealistic movements and turned to Dutch liberal republicanism; but republicanism lost to the monarchists, so Spinoza then defined democratic processes that might be consistent with the life of free men, and that were essential to any form of government that would make such a life possible. |
