C.  Wright  Mills
        | short profile |
Charles Wright Mills was a radical intellectual of the 1950s, a social scientist and
merciless critic of ideology, and a writer of scrupulous, robust & generous mind.
His ideas continue to resonate today.
           C. Wright Mills was born at Waco, Texas on 28 August 1916. He did well at the University of Texas, graduating in philosophy in 1939. He received his PhD degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1941; his heroes were Max Weber [1864-1920] & Karl Marx, his dissertation was on pragmatism. After a short stint at the University of Maryland, he moved to Columbia University in New York City in 1945. He was promoted to assistant professor [of sociology] in 1946; though he was not given a full professorship until 1956, he nonetheless turned down other offers and stayed at Columbia out of belief that New York City was the center of U.S. intellectual activity.
The ambitious three works on stratification for which he is most famous are "The New Men of Power: America's Labor Leaders" (1948), "White Collar: The American Middle Classes" (1951), and his best-known & most controversial work, "The Power Elite" (1956). Later works included a scathing book on sociological practice, "The Sociological Imagination" (1959).
He had three wives, who each bore one child.
He died on 20 March 1962, in Nyack, N.Y. His two daughters published a book of his collected letters in May 2000.
The major search engines bring up dozens of serious & important links about C. Wright Mills, by sociologists busy using his concepts today, in a multitude of languages; some are included here.
"Mills is half forgotten – perhaps because much of what he said is now taken for granted."
— Norman Birnbaum
