Dr.  W.  Edwards  Deming
            | short profile |
William Edwards Deming was born 14 October 1900 in Sioux Ciy, Iowa. He studied engineering and mathematics and physics, obtaining his PhD at Yale University in 1928. He also studied music, playing many instruments and writing music his whole life. He married Agnes Bell in 1922; she died in 1930. In 1932, he married Lola Elizabeth Shupe and they moved to Washington, D.C. in 1936, living there until their deaths.
Deming became a statistician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the U.S. Army. His post-WWII work in Japan was an astounding success, and in 1951 J.U.S.E. {The Union of Japanese Scientists & Engineers} established the Deming Prize 'for contributions to quality and dependability of product' in his honor. He was awarded the A.S.Q.'s Shewhart Medal in 1955 and the Second Order Medal of the Sacred Treasure by Emperor Hirohito in 1960, among other awards.
Deming was revered in Japan like few other Americans, yet largely ignored in his home country until recently. He established the Institute bearing his name just before his death 'to foster understanding of The Deming System of Profound Knowledge™ to advance commerce, prosperity and peace'. He wrote many books, but the central works are "Out of The Crisis" [1982] and "The New Economics" [1993] (see below). He died at home on 20 December 1993.
