“If I have a thousand ideas and only one of them turns out to be good, I am satisfied.”
Alfred Nobel [1833-96]

“If I could explain it to the average person, [it] wouldn't have been worth the Nobel Prize.” - in 1965
Richard P. Feynman [1918-88]

“Science has a simple faith, which transcends utility. It is the faith that it is the privilege of man to learn to understand, and that this is his mission.”
engineer Vannevar Bush [1890-1974]

Science is defined on Wikipedia as "a neutral, rigorous, systematic endeavor that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe". The earliest written records of identifiable predecessors to modern science date to Bronze Age Egypt and Mesopotamia from around 3000 to 1200 BCE. Scientific research deteriorated after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the Gupta Empire in India during the early Middle Ages (400 to 1000 CE,) but was preserved and expanded upon in the Middle East during the Islamic Golden Age (8th-13th Centuries) and later by the efforts of Byzantine Greek scholars who brought Greek manuscripts from the dying Byzantine Empire to Western Europe during the Renaissance (15th & 16th Centuries).

The Scientific Revolution marked the emergence of modern science when developments in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology (including human anatomy), and chemistry transformed the views of society about nature. The Scientific Revolution took place in Europe in the second half of the Renaissance period, with its beginning often attributed to publications of Nicolaus Copernicus [1473-1543].

As new ideas and discoveries departed from previous Greek conceptions & traditions, the scientific method soon played a greater role in knowledge creation; however, it was not until the 19th Century that many of the institutional and professional features of science began to take shape, along with changing the term 'natural philosophy' to 'natural science'.

common drawing of Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi  "The Illustrated Book of Fixed Stars" [Persia 964 A.D.] by Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi
Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi was frustrated that some of his contemporaries considered themselves well-read in astronomical matters even though they never looked at constellations in the sky. Al-Sufi’s new text helped bring the stars to life: he diagrammed 48 constellations twice: once from outside of a celestial globe and one from inside, showing what would be seen from the ground. Al-S?f?’s immensely popular book added several more celestial bodies along with corrections and other notes. These include a mention of a 'nebulous smear' in one constellation, which turned out to be the Andromeda galaxy (the first written description of a galaxy other than the Milky Way). In the 15th century, a distressed copy of al-Sufi’s book made its way to sultan, astronomer, and mathematician Ulugh Bey, who commissioned a new version with additional illustrations. • no book versions found on either Amazon or Internet Archive (2024)

Episode 22: "Dark Matter" [November 29, 2018]
Begin with active galaxies that have supermassive black holes gobbling up nearby stars. Then consider clusters of galaxies and the clues they give for missing mass - dubbed 'dark matter'. Chart the distribution of dark matter around galaxies and speculate what it might be. Close with the Big Bang, deduced from evidence that most galaxies are speeding away from us - the farther away, the faster.
Episode 24: The History of The Universe" [November 29, 2018]
In this final episode, follow the trail of the greatest unsolved problem in astrophysics. Along the way, get a grip on the past, present, and future of the universe. Discovered in the 1990s, the problem is 'dark energy', which is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. Trace this mysterious force to the lambda term of the celebrated Friedmann equations, proposed in the 1920s.

'Big Bang' Theory
If the known laws of physics are extrapolated beyond where they are valid, there is a singularity. Modern measurements place this moment at approximately 13.8 billion years ago, which is thus considered the age of the universe. After the initial expansion, the universe cooled sufficiently to allow the formation of subatomic particles, and later simple atoms. Giant clouds of these primordial elements later coalesced through gravity to form stars and galaxies. This Big Bang Model provides the best description of our known universe.

Lemaître, Einstein, and the Birth of Modern Cosmology book by John Farrell  "The Day Without Yesterday: Lemaître, Einstein, and the Birth of Modern Cosmology" [2005]
by science writer John Farrell

Belgian scientist Georges Lemaître played a seminal role in the development of our current understanding of the Big Bang and black holes. Albert Einstein dismissed Lemaître's ideas at their first encounter, in 1927; later, the great man regarded him as a valuable colleague. Lemaître believed at first that the universe expanded from an initial static state; only later did he arrive at his theory of a 'primeval atom', which George Gamow and others developed into the Big Bang Theory. Farrell explains how Lemaître determined that what we now call a black hole is a singularity where the radius of the sphere collapses to zero. Lemaître also stuck with the cosmological constant after Einstein had abandoned it, a stance validated in the 1990s when scientists discovered that the universe's expansion is accelerating.

Modern View of the Origin of the Universe book by Steven Weinberg  "The First Three Minutes: A Modern View of The Origin of The Universe, Illustrated"
[orig 1977, updated 1993] by Nobel-laureate Steven Weinberg [1933-2021]

Wonderful detail about what happened in the first three minutes after the Big Bang, an exhilarating journey that begins with the Planck Epoch - the earliest period of time in the history of the universe - and goes through Einstein's Theories of Relativity, the Hubble Red Shift, and the detection of the Cosmic Microwave Background. These incredible discoveries all form the foundation for what we now understand as the 'standard model' of the origin of the universe. The book not only examines what this model looks like, but also tells the exciting story of the bold thinkers who put it together.

"The Great Courses: The Big Bang and Beyond - Exploring The Early Universe"
12-episode online course
[Wondrium 2021]
The Big Bang and Beyond online course  Hosted by cosmologist Prof. Gary N. Felder, PhD of Smith College [est. 1871]
Together, dark matter and dark energy account for all but a tiny fraction of everything there is. Everything that you see with your eyes and with powerful instruments - stars, planets, galaxies, dust, and gas - and everything that you think of as atom-based matter is only 5% of what we now know exists. The story of how we arrived at this startling cosmic recipe is an absorbing drama that takes you through the breakthrough discoveries in astronomy and physics since the turn of the 20th century.official course homepage
