AC-DC  War  of  The  Currents
short history |              |
Thomas Edison invented direct current electricity and working light bulbs and expected to make his fortune installing power plants one-half to two miles apart; Nikola Tesla invented alternating current electricity which could be transmitted for long distances, and industrialist George Westinghouse bought Tesla's patents in 1888. Over the following decade, Edison fought ruthlessly to stop the ascendence of AC but was eventually defeated.
