Amazon  Business Practices
Like many corporations, Amazon wants the approval of their customers, espousing progressive and sensitive and ecological ideals
while actually practicing anti-union, anti-competitive, and pro-pollution activities – Amazon's hypocrisy is a matter of record.
    | Amazon executives have long been trying to negotiate lower prices for ebooks (i.e. Kindle Editions) sold on Amazon's website while increasing Amazon's share of each sale (to as much as 80%). Negotiations with international publisher Hachette Book Group reached an impasse in Spring 2014, at which point Amazon re-coded entries for Hachette's books to tell Amazon customers that the books were available for the retail price only (standard discounts removed), that the books were out of stock or delivery would take two to three weeks (not true), and also recommending books from other publishers as 'better'. |
Many Hachette authors saw their sales drop 80 and 90 percent. Author Douglas Preston of Santa Fe, New Mexico quickly organized the non-profit group Authors United and enrolled scores of published authors in signing an open letter to Amazon, Inc. (I am a signatory author.) Their two-page paid advertisement ran in the New York Times on Sunday 10 August 2014, and received worldwide notice. The letter called on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to stop targeting Hachette authors; the New York Times ran a same-day favorable article on the front page. Amazon's response was an email to authors mis-quoting George Orwell's novel "1984", which got them chastised by the George Orwell Estate, who accused Amazon of Orwellian 'doublespeak'.
On November 13th, Amazon and Hachette revealed a signed agreement ending the dispute. Both sides claimed victory, and Hachette remains in control of prices set for their e-books for sale at Amazon. (The situation is expected to return to normal |

Work at an Amazon warehouse under construction in Windsor, northern Connecticut was again suspended after another noose – the eighth in a month – was discovered at the worksite on Wednesday 26 May 2021. The newest noose, made of red rope, was found among yellow electrical cables. The site reopened the next day; Amazon is offering a $100,000 reward for information that helps identify those responsible for the incidents, which investigators are treating as possible hate crimes.
