As work progressed on this page, it became clear that after 1884, the popular books mostly utilized the 'definitive' translations by Margaret Hunt,
so the significant difference among the books that are coded here became the illustrations. And after coding lots of books here, the important/complete publications
were kept and the other, smaller or more recent editions were cut over to the Books Section of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales [1812 & 1815] Page.

Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm's epic "Deutsches Wörterbuch (German Dictionary)" was begun under contract in 1838; eight volumes consisting of 1824 printed columns, a bibliography, and a detailed preface were finally published in April 1854; that first edition sold an amazing 10,000 copies. Wilhelm Grimm expanded articles to the letter D and died in 1859; Jacob was able to fully complete the letters A, B, C, and E, and died in 1863 while working on the entry for 'Frucht' (fruit). Other scholars continued the Grimm Brothers' work (for a hundred years!) and the last of the 32 volumes was completed and published in 1961; a supplemental volume 33 containing 25,000 additional entries was published in 1971.
