Book 1: Dune [1965]
The far future of humanity is a sprawling feudal interstellar empire where planetary fiefdoms are controlled by noble Houses that owe allegiance to the Imperial House Corrino. Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, 'the spice', a drug which extends human life and provides accelerated levels of thought. Young Paul Atreides (heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and scion of House Atreides) and his family relocate to Arrakis where the fate of Paul, his family, his new planet and its native inhabitants, as well as the Padishah Emperor, the powerful Spacing Guild, and the secretive female order of the Bene Gesserit, are all drawn together into a confrontation that will change the course of humanity - a story that explores the complex and multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion and explodes into conflict with malevolent forces . . . only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

The  Author

Frank  Herbert [1920-86]
Frank Patrick Herbert, Jr. was born on 8 October 1920 in Tacoma, Washington State; he worked for several newspapers as a reporter and-or photographer, served for six months in the U.S. Navy during World War II (medical discharge), then worked for several more West Coast newspapers. He married Flora Parkinson in San Pedro, California in 1940; they had a daughter Penny [b. February 1942], but divorced in 1945. He married Beverly Ann Stuart in Seattle, Washington in 1946; they had two sons:, Brian Patrick Herbert [b. 1947] and Bruce Calvin Herbert [1951-93].

The first Frank Herbert sci-fi story to be published appeared in April 1952; he began researching "Dune" in 1959; the book was serialized in two parts (eight issues) in "Astounding Magazine": "Dune World" in 1963-64 and "Prophet of Dune" in 1965. After rejection by nearly a score of publishers, Chilton Books (famous for automobile repair manuals) offered a $7,500 advance and future royalties to publish the hardcover edition; Herbert rewrote much of the text.

"Dune" was not an immediate commercial success, but did receive the Nebula Award for Best Novel and a shared Hugo Award. Herbert made excellent money from the book, but still not enough to write full time. He finally retired in 1972 and divided his time between homes in Hawai'i and on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, and wrote more fiction.

Herbert continued the 'Dune Saga' with "Dune Messiah" [1969 serial], "Children of Dune" [1976 bestseller], and "God Emperor of Dune" [1981], and also wrote "The Godmakers" [1972], "The Dosadi Experiment" [1977], and "The White Plague" [1982]. He wrote "Destination: Void" [1965 serial], for which he co-authored (with Bill Ransom) the sequels "The Jesus Incident" [1979], "The Lazarus Effect" [1983], and "The Ascension Factor" 1988].
The 'Dune Saga' was completed with "Heretics of Dune" [1984] and "Chapterhouse: Dune" [1985].

Frank Herbert died at age 65 on 11 February 1986 of complications after surgery for pancreatic cancer.
