"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" [story 1865, book 1867]
After failing in several careers, Sam Clemons published a humorous short story about a jumping frog contest under his pseudonym Mark Twain in The New York Saturday Press,
and attained his first success. When he published a book of 27 similar short stories in 1867 with "Jumping Frog" as the title story, it was extremely successful, and he attained
his first fame as an author.

"The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today" [1873 novel] with Charles Dudley Warner
  | The novel satirizes land speculation and political corruption of the early 1870s, and the title became the common term for the excesses of the era. Twain and Warner were friends & neighbors in Hartford, Connecticut and began the book when they were challenged at dinner by their wives to write a better novel than the ladies were reading. Twain wrote the first 11 chapters, Warner the next twelve; later sections alternated, with the two men collaborating on the conclusion.
