color portrait of British children's author Roald Dahl [1916-90]

“We are the music makers and the dreamers of dreams.”

“If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

“Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most
unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.” - in "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory"

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.” - in "The Witches" [1983]

“Listen, you little wiseacre: I'm smart, you're dumb; I'm big, you're little; I'm right, you're wrong,
and there's nothing you can do about it.” – Matilda's father

“One way or another every human being is unique, for better or for worse.”

“A little nonsense now and then / Is cherished by the wisest men.”

Many books by Roald Dahl have recently been altered for violating political correctness standards, causing an uproar about needless censorship from novelist Salman Rushdie and others; so publisher Penguin announced in February 2023 that they will publish 'classic' (read: uncensored) versions of Roald Dahl’s books in addition to the newly-edited versions - changes will be made on this page as Amazon links become available.

"The Gremlins" [unproduced Disney project 1943]
Disney Studios artwork for proposed 1943 animated feature film  Roald Dahl and Walt Disney met in April of 1943 to discuss several projects, one of which was "The Gremlins" [12/1942], Dahl's second published short story (first publication in the December 1942 issue of "Cosmopolitan Magazine", with illustrations by Disney Studios); the movie was eventually shelved, but was later released as a book by Disney and Random House with all pro-ceeds going to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund; that book went on, however, to serve as inspiration for the "Gremlins" [Amblin Ent./Warner Bros. 1984] feature film, executive produced by Steven Spielberg. As-of 2017, Disney still owns the rights to the characters.

Gremlin Trouble book by Jim Korkis  "Gremlin Trouble!: The Cursed Roald Dahl Film Disney Never Made" [2017]
by Jim Korkis, Foreword by Bill Justice

As the Disney studio struggled to make heroes out of the malicious gremlins, and labored to write a script that would appeal to an American audience, a wave of 'gremlin mania' swept the country, but Disney had no film to take advantage of it, due in large part to Dahl's lack of cooperation and even outright opposition. Americans soon tired of gremlins, and Disney soon tired of Dahl . . .

"Disney's The B.F.G." [Disney/Dreamworks/Amblin Ent. June 2016]
poster for Spielberg Amblin Disney movie 'The B.F.G.'
Spielberg Amblin Disney movie 'The B.F.G.' on DVD
The B.F.G. is a Big Friendly Giant, only 24 feet tall, with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell; he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part; the other giants are 40- to 50-foot tall man-eaters; ten-year-old orphan Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, quickly bonds with the Big Friendly Giant as the other giants make plans to invade London; so Sophie and the B.F.G. visit Queen Elizabeth and they devise a plan to get rid of the nasty giants once and for all . . . • First live-action 3-D feature film of producer and director Steven Spielberg, and his thirtieth theatrical movie; it was released in standard 2-D, Disney Digital 3-D, RealD 3-D, and IMAX 3-D formats. Producers Frank Marshall & Kathleen Kennedy first began development of a theatrical movie adaptation in 1991; DreamWorks acquired the rights in 2011. Principal photography began in Spring 2015 in Burnaby (suburb of Vancouver), British Columbia, Canada in a huge and old and dark warehouse. Estimated losses to Disney on this film were between $90 and $100 million due to the film's underwhelming box office performance (largely due to its release only two weeks after Disney's hit "Finding Dory") • 2-hour combination live action, performance capture, and C.G.I. animation feature film co-produced & directed by Steven Spielberg; co-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Kristie Macosko Krieger, John Madden, Sam Mercer, Michael Siegel, Adam Somner; co-produced & written by Melissa Mathison [1950-2015], lovingly based on the book by Roald Dahl; music by John Williams (24th score for Spielberg); cinematography by Janusz Kaminski (15th movie with Spielberg); visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri (Weta Digital); edited by Michael Kahn (26th movie with Spielberg); starring Ruby Barnhill {as Sophie}, Penelope Wilton, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall, Michael Adamthwaite, Marilyn Norry, Callum Seagram Airlie, Haig Sutherland, Shauna Hansen, Denise Jones, Gabrielle Rose, Anthony F. Ingram, Chris Shields, Matt Frewer, Geoffrey Wade, John Emmet Tracy, William Samples, Andy Thompson, Paul Barnhill, Lucia Ryan, Julia Torrance, Randy Rafuse, Gerardo Barcala, Gintare Beinoraviciute, Graham Curry, Jabbz Farooqi, Robin Harvey, Simona Hughes, Tobias James-Samuels, Jeff Kent, Adam McCort, John Specogna, D.H.
