  • 2018: [There was] an 80% reduction in the C.D.C.’s program that worked in various countries to fight epidemics: “Countries where the C.D.C. is planning to scale back include some of the world’s hot spots for emerging infectious disease, such as China, Pakistan, Haiti, Rwanda, and Congo”.
  • 2018 April 10: President Trump dissolved the Homeland Security global health security team overseen by advisor Tom Bossert, essentially firing him; he was not replaced.
  • 2018 May 8: President Trump dissolved the National Security Council's position of Senior Director for Global Health Security & Bio-defense; Rear Admiral R. Timothy Ziemer was not reassigned.
  • 2018 May 18: Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio sent a letter { page 1 + page 2 } to President Trump demanding answers after Trump fired the entire White House pandemic team.
  • 2019 July: Dr. Luciana Borio, Director for Medical & Biodefense Preparedness at the National Security Council, left the job; President Trump did not replace her.

  • 2020 Jan 8: flu bug   Washington Post reporters Gerry Shih and Lena Sun reported an outbreak of an 'unidentified and possibly new viral disease in central China' that was sending alarms across Asia in advance of the Lunar New Year travel season; based on a C.D.C. warning.
  • 2020 Jan 30: flu bug   W.H.O. declared the Wuhan 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency. More than 200 people have died from the flu-like virus, and more than 9,400 have been infected.
  • 2020 Jan 31: flu bug   Twitter and Facebook took steps to remove misinformation about the Wuhan 2019-nCoV coronavirus on their platforms.
  • 2020 Saturday Feb 29: flu bug   Health officials in Washington state said a Wuhan 2019-nCoV coronavirus patient died there, the first confirmed novel virus death in the United States; he was reportedly in his 50s and had underlying health issues.

  • 2020 Fri March 13: The U.S. District Court of New Mexico suspended all criminal & civil jury trials starting Monday March 16 until April 10, because of the danger presented to jurors, attorneys, and court staff by the coronavirus outbreak.
  • 2020 Sat March 14: Free drive-thru coronavirus testing became available at hospitals in Albuquerque: Lovelace starts screenings Downtown, Presbyterian will start soon.
  • 2020 Sat March 14: As-of 3pm, there is a total of 13 cases in New Mexico: 6 cases in Bernalillo County, 3 cases in Santa Fe County, 2 cases in Sandoval County, and 2 cases in Socorro County.
  • 2020 Sun March 15: New Mexico state health officials announced four more New Mexico residents who have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the state's total positive tests for the novel coronavirus to 17.
  • 2020 Mon March 16: New Mexico’s largest electricity provider P.N.M. and New Mexico Gas Company announced that they are suspending electric service and gas disconnections due to the impact of the coronavirus. The Albuquerque Museum closed to the public through April 15. Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains remains open.
  • 2020 Tue March 17: flu bug   23 cases in New Mexico; the Wuhan 2019-nCoV coronavirus has now spread to all 50 states and Washington, DC as West Virginia announced its first case; the number of cases in the U.S. has surpassed 6,500 with 115 deaths.
  • 2020 Wed March 18: New Mexico state health officials announced that five more people have tested positive for COVID-19, currently totaling 28 positive tests statewide.
  • 2020 Thu March 19: New Mexico state health officials announced that seven more people have tested positive for COVID-19, currently totaling 35 positive tests statewide.
  • 2020 Fri March 20: flu bug   The Wuhan 2019-nCoV coronavirus worldwide pandemic is now 254,996 cases and 10,444 deaths, for a death rate of 4 percent; the U.S.A. now has 14,322 cases and 210 deaths, for a death rate of 1.5 percent.
  • 2020 Sun March 22: An Eddy County man in his late 70s died at Artesia General Hospital, the first trumpvirus death in New Mexico.

  • 2020 Mon April 6: Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham finalized an emergency order extending the stay-at-home instruction and all COVID19 public health orders through at least April 30th, including additional restrictions for essential businesses, including limiting the number of customers allowed in retail spaces.

  • 2020 Sun July 5: New Mexico now has 513 deaths from coronavirus, 13,256 positive tests, 361,798 negative tests, and 5,860 reported recoveries.

  • 2020 Fri July 10: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, citing an 'untenable' increase in coronavirus cases, brought back some restrictions beginning on Monday, including that restaurants & breweries will not be able to offer indoor dining, and that access to state parks is restricted to New Mexico residents only.
  • 2020 Sun July 19: New Mexico had 569 deaths from coronavirus, 16,736 positive tests, 443,928 negative tests, and 6,736 reported recoveries.

  • 2020 Fri Aug 28: flu bug   Navajo Nation health officials say that a new death from COVID-19 brings the total there to 500 members. Other statistics are: 9,780 positive tests, 84,319 negative tests, and 7,032 reported recoveries. (The Navajo Reservation covers 71,000 km² or 27,413 square miles; the majority is in Arizona, with smaller portions in Utah & New Mexico.)
  • 2020 Fri Sept 4: The 96th Burning of Zozobra went virtual this year! The annual event was televised and live streamed.
  • 2020 Sun Sept 6: New Mexico had 803 deaths from coronavirus, 26,107 positive tests, 765,729 negative tests, and 13,530 reported recoveries.
  • 2020 Mon Sept 28: flu bug   The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus pandemic reached 1 million, with more than 33 million confirmed infections; about 205,000 people have died in the United States.
  • 2020 Fri Oct 9: New Mexico had 902 deaths from coronavirus; also 32,241 positive tests, 947,812 negative tests, and 18,335 reported recoveries.

  • 2020 Thu Dec 31: flu bug   Year-end epidemic statistics for New Mexico: 41 new deaths from Wuhan 2019-nCoV corona-virus, total 2,477 deaths, 142,864 positive tests, 1,827,348 negative tests, and 803 cases in hospital. Meanwhile, 77,124 people in the U.S. died of coronavirus in December, making it the deadliest month of the pandemic.

  • 2021 Monday May 24: Audit by NM Dept. of Health found 114 additional deaths in New Mexico; adding them brings the total to 4,245 deaths from COVID-19.
  • 2021 Thurs June 3: New Mexico's COVID epidemic status further improved: all turquoise!
    So Gov. Grisham set a goal of ending the color-coded system at the end of June, as long as 60% of residents are fully vaccinated by then.

  • 2021 Friday June 18: Gov. Grisham announced that capacity-based restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic will end in New Mexico on July 1st, which means that all companies will be able to open at 100 percent capacity. “The simple fact is: We are beating this pandemic,” said Gov. Grisham. The opening is the most dramatic rollback of COVID-19 restrictions since March of last year, when New Mexico declared a state of emergency.
  • 2021 late July: New Mexico is officially 72% of adults vaccinated, but county rates vary widely from 84% to 40%.
  • 2021 Aug 3: New cases of COVID-19 reached the highest rate since March, 94% of new cases since February 1 have been unvaccinated individuals; other numbers: total 4,415 deaths, 211,970 positive tests, 3,623,759 negative tests, 180 cases in hospital, and 1,123,506 residents are fully vaccinated.
  • 2021 Tuesday Aug 17: Gov. Grisham announced updated temporary rules to re-implement a statewide requirement that face masks be worn in all public indoor spaces, with only limited exceptions, and regardless of vaccination status, to stem the state’s rising tide of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations – effective Friday August 20.
  • 2021 Friday Aug 27: The surge caused a record 958 new cases of COVID-19; other numbers: 9 new deaths, total 4,505 deaths, 229,509 positive tests, 3,871,508 negative tests, 362 cases in hospital, and 1,169,205 residents are fully vaccinated.
  • 2021 Sept 14: New Mexico state mask mandates extended until October - maybe further.
  • 2021 Monday Oct 25: flu bug   Another grim milestone for New Mexico: state health officials reported 15 additional deaths from Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, for a total of 5,002 COVID-19-related deaths in the state since the beginning of the pandemic in March of last year. (This number is an increase of 1,000 or 25% since 16 April 2021.)
  • 2021 Nov 2: flu bug   The U.S. deathtoll from COVID-19 passed 750,000 people; the majority of people who died recently were unvaccinated.
  • 2021 Monday Nov 8: flu bug   State health officials reported 3,370 additional COVID-19 cases over the weekend, including 19 new deaths in just 3 days; New Mexico COVID cases surged 48% in the prior two weeks, with hospitalizations up 21%.
  • 2021 Wed Dec 8: flu bug   The University of New Mexico is requiring all employees and students to get a COVID-19 booster shot by January 17; the new requirement expands on the previous vaccination requirement and applies to all individuals eligible for booster shots, while limited religious- and medical-based exemptions may be granted.
  • 2021 Dec 13: flu bug   COVID-19 Omicron is confirmed in D.C. and 30 U.S. states as the variant is poised to dominate in Europe.
  • 2021 Dec 13: flu bug   New Mexico health officials announced the first confirmed case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19; the case is a female adult in Bernalillo County who reported travel to another state that had reported cases of the variant; she was seen in an emergency room but has since been discharged to recover at home.

  • 2022 Monday Jan 10: flu bug   Another grim milestone for New Mexico: state health officials reported 37 additional deaths over the weekend, for a total of 6,020 COVID-19-related deaths in the state since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020. (This number is an increase of 1,018 or 20% since 25 October 2021.)
  • 2022 Friday Feb 4: flu bug   The nation hit another tragic milestone: more than 900,000 people in the U.S. have died of covid-19, even though coronavirus infections across the country are dropping; deaths lag cases, so it’s a reflection of Omicron’s huge surge in January.
  • 2022 Monday Feb 7: flu bug   Individuals NOT fully vaccinated made up 81.3% of hospitalizations in New Mexico and 88.5% of deaths.
  • 2022 Tuesday Feb 8: flu bug   "The world surpassed 400 million known coronavirus cases, just one month after reaching 300 million." – per The New York Times
  • 2022 Friday Feb 11: flu bug   The State of New Mexico hit another COVID milestone: more than 500,000 positive tests.
  • 2022 March 8: flu bug   Another grim milestone for New Mexico: state health officials reported 22 additional deaths over the weekend, for a total of 7,010 COVID-19-related deaths in the state since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020. (This number is an increase of 990 or 16.5% since 10 January 2022.)
  • 2022 Friday April 29: flu bug   Difficult to pin down details due to reporting inconsistencies, but the nation hit another tragic milestone: more than one million people in the U.S. have died of the COVID-19 Trumpvirus. How? Why? While more than three-quarters of Americans have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, less than one-third have received a booster.
  • 2022 May 31: flu bug   Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland of New Mexico tested positive for COVID-19 after having had all four vaccinations; she experienced mild symptoms and began working remotely from Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • 2022 June 9: flu bug   Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller tested positive for COVID-19 and has canceled his attendance at upcoming events, per his office.
  • 2022 July 9: flu bug   New Mexico Department of Health ads on the radio announce that COVID-19 vaccines are approved and available for everyone from six months of age and up, ask your doctor or visit vaccineNM {dot} org.
  • 2022 Sept 15: flu bug   Another grim milestone for New Mexico: state health officials reported 12 additional deaths, for a total of 8,509 COVID-19-related deaths in the state since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020.
  • 2022 Sept 18: flu bug   President Biden made an apparently off-the-cuff remark on “60 Minutes”, saying "The pandemic is over. We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lot of work on it. But the pandemic is over." Major furor followed, of course, but the facts of the matter are that new COVID-19 infections are down to just over 65,000 per day and that COVID-19 deaths are down to around 400 per day.
  • 2022 Nov 1: The New Mexico Department of Health officially announced the beginning of this year's flu season, as many cases are already being reported across the state. Citizens are encouraged to get vaccinations against COVID-19, R.S.V. (respiratory syncytial virus) in children, and now seasonal flu.
