A  Few  Important  Dates

  • 1400 BCE: The Clepsydra water clock of Babylon.
  • circa 400 BCE: Legend of the 'bronze man' Talos, said to be constructed by Hephaestus (and-or Daedalus) at the request of Zeus, for the purpose of protecting Europa from invaders of the island of Crete. Talos circled the island three times each day and threw big rocks at any approaching non-Cretan ship.
  • circa 270 BCE: The water clock of Greek inventor Csestibus that utilized animated human figures.
  • circa 100 BCE: The Antikythera celestial mechanism was probably designed by Archimedes [287-212 BCE].
  • 1495: Leonardo da Vinci [1452-1519] designed a clockwork knight which was able to sit up, wave its arms, and move its head and jaw; it is uncertain whether the machine was ever built, but the design may constitute that of the first humanoid robot.
  • 1737: French inventor Jacques Vaucanson [1709-82] built a Digesting Duck, a clockwork capable of flapping its wings, quacking, eating, and digesting food.
  • 1769: The Mechanical Turk built by Hungarian author & inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen [1734-1804], a maplewood box with a mannequin dressed in cloak and turban protruding from the back. The device gained great fame as an automaton capable of playing chess against skilled opponents – until the discovery that a human operator was hidden inside the box.
  • 1801: French silk weaver & inventor Joseph Jacquard [1752-1834] invented an automated loom controlled by punch-cards; within a decade it had been mass-produced and thousands were in use across Europe.
  • 1868: Publication of Edward S. Ellis' "Huge Hunter, or The Steam Man of The Prairies", the first literary reference to a mechanical man.
  • 1881: Italian author Carlo Lorenzini [1826-90] wrote "Pinnochio", a children’s book about a marionette who turns into a real boy.
  • 1898: Visionary inventor Nikola Tesla [1856-1943] demonstrated his new 'teleautomaton' invention – a radio-controlled model boat – to spectators at Madison Square Garden in New York City; the audience believed that it was a trick, and remote control technology did not become commonplace until decades later.
  • 1900 April: A shipwreck was discovered off the Greek island of Antikythera in 45 metres (148 feet) of water by sponge divers, who retrieved a large number of bronze & marble statues, pottery, unique glassware, jewelry, coins, and other artefacts. The clockwork mechanism sat in a museum warehouse for two years before it was identified as such.
  • 1917 July: The first robot to appear on a movie screen {not in "Metropolis" in 1927): "A Clever Dummy" silent short written & produced by Mack Sennett, starring Ben Turpin.
  • 1921: Czech playwright Karel Capek [1890-1938] coined the term 'robot' in his stageplay "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robot)". The word comes from the Czech robota, which means drudging, forced work. The play ends with robots taking over the Earth and destroying their makers.
  • 1926: German film director Fritz Lang [1890-1976] released "Metropolis", a silent film set in a futuristic urban dystopia that features a female robot named Maria who takes the shape of a human woman in order to destroy a labor movement. (Maria was the first robot to appear in a feature film.)
  • 1942: American writer Isaac Asimov [1920-92] published the short story “Runaround”, which introduces the Three Laws of Robotics:
          1. A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
          2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
          3. A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
  • 1947: invention of the transistor
  • 1948: American mathematician Norbert Wiener [1894-1964] published "Cybernetics: or, Control and Commu-nication In The Animal and The Machine", a seminal work in the field of practical robotics.
  • 1952: The Servomechanisms Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology demonstrated computer-assisted manufacturing: a robotic milling machine created a commemorative ashtray for each attendee.
  • 1954: Industrial robotics pioneer George Devol [1912-2011] created Unimate, the world’s first programmable robot; in 1961 the machine was put to work on a General Motors automotive assembly line.
  • 1956: George Devol and Joseph Engelberger [1925-2015] formed the world’s first robotics company, Unimation; in the 1960s, it was purchased by Condec Corporation, which later was bought, in part, by industrial manufacturing giant Eaton ETN.
  • 1966: The Artificial Intelligence Center at Stanford Research Center began development of Shakey the Robot, the first mobile robot; it was endowed with a limited ability to see and model its environment, and was controlled by a computer that filled an entire room.
  • 1968: The HAL 9000 (Heuristically-programmed ALgorithmic) computer appeared in the Stanley Kubrick [1928-99] film "2001: A Space Odyssey", written (and novelized) by Arthur C. Clarke [1917-2008]. The artificially intelligent HAL computer runs the spaceship Discovery – and eventually goes berserk; the character reflects concern about the increasing power of intelligent machines over man.
  • 1977: Plucky androids R2-D2 and C-3PO appeared in George Lucas‘s "Star Wars"; the pair are arguably the best-known robots in modern culture.
  • 1979: The Stanford Cart, a four-wheeled rover equipped with a TV camera for vision, navigated around the obstacles in a chair-filled room by analyzing and programming its own course.
  • 1991 Aug 6: The first webpage on the World Wide Web was placed online by physicist Tim Berners-Lee at C.E.R.N. in Switzerland.
  • 1993: An eight-legged robot named Dante began to explore Antarctica’s Mt. Erebus volcano; the landmark effort was remotely controlled from the U.S., and ushered in a new era of robotic exploration of hazardous and distant environments.
  • 1997: The tiny Sojourner Rover began its scientific mission on Mars; it moved at a maximum speed of 0.02 miles per hour to explore the immediate area around its landing point, and took 550 photographs over the next three months.
  • 1998: A fuzzy, batlike robot called Furby became the must-have toy of the holiday season; the $30 toys were designed to 'evolve' over time, first speaking in gibberish, but soon developing the use of pre-programmed English phrases. Over 27 million of the toys sold in a 12-month period.
  • 1999: Sony‘s robot dog AIBO was a $2,000 mechanical mutt able to navigate around a room and to respond to a limited set of voice commands.
  • 2000: Honda Motor Company’s humanoid robot ASIMO stands 1.3 meters (four feet) tall, and can walk and run with a near-human gait.
  • 2002: iRobot released the Roomba robotic vacuum; with over six million units sold, the Frisbee-shaped device is the most commercially successful domestic robot in history.
  • 2004 Jan 4: NASA’s Spirit Rover landed on Mars and began exploration of the planet; the original plan for a 90-day mission was extended for 6 years, and the rover traveled over 7.7 kilometers distance before shutting down.
  • 2004: The robotics industry exceeded $1 billion in revenues in North America.
  • 2005: Stanley, an autonomously-driven vehicle created by a team from Stanford University, successfully negotiated a 212 kilometer off-road track and became the first car to complete the D.A.R.P.A. Grand Challenge, winning a $2 million prize.
  • 2012: The final mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery delivered the first humanoid robot in space to the International Space Station; dubbed R2, the 'robonaut' has a near-human range of motion and can perform tasks deemed too dangerous for human astronauts.
  • 2012: The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles issued the world’s first license for a robotic, self-driven car, a Toyota Prius modified with technology developed by Google; by the end of 2012, Google’s driverless cars had logged more than 300,000 miles in traffic, and had not caused a single accident.
  • 2016 April: Microsoft released a machine-learning chatbot named Tay, which took less that 24 hours to mirror prejudice and xenophobia and racism from online trolls who gleefully abused Tay's A.I. programming; Microsoft yanked Tay offline 'for adjustments'.

  • 2022 Sept 29: Tesla, Inc. CEO Elon Musk unveiled the prototype for its humanoid robot 'Optimus' at the company’s second A.I. showcase; the robot walked and waved live on stage; in videos, it carried boxes around a Tesla office and watered plants with a watering can.

Written by Karel Capek [1890-1938]; published in 1920, first staged in Prague in January 1921
R.U.R. stands for 'Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti' (Rossum’s Universal Robots); the play introduced the word 'robot' to the English language and to science fiction as a whole; the robot characters are more like bio-androids that eventually kill all the humans on Earth except one male non-scientist worker

"The Killer Robots" intergalactic rock band, etc.
Began as a rock band in 2004, imitating the costumery & style of Kiss; stage show morphed into performance art, which morphed into videos and
full-length films. Very strange bunch, very anarchic razzle-dazzle video game visuals, included here because, yes, the characters are robots.
