but don't fling me in dat brier-patch,' sezee. — in "Legends of The Old Plantation" [1886]

"Licker talks mighty loud w'en it gits loose from de jug."
"Rooster makes mo’ racket dan de hen w’at lay de aig."
"Mighty po’ bee dat don’t make mo’ honey dan he want."
"Watch out when you're gettin' all you want. Fattenin' hogs ain't in luck."
— in "Plantation Proverbs"

"You can't run away from trouble. There ain't no place that far." — Uncle Remus

"I seem to see before me the smiling faces of thousands of children, some young and fresh and some wearing the friendly marks of age. But all children at heart and not an unfriendly face among them. And while I’m trying hard to speak the right word, I seem to hear a voice lifted above the rest saying 'you have made some of us happy'. And so I feel my heart fluttering and my lips trembling, and I have to bow silently and turn away and hurry back into the obscurity that fits me best."
— Preface, "Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings", 1895 edition

History of The Books
Joel Chandler Harris first published his Uncle Remus stories in 1880. A new edition with illustrations by A.B. Frost was published in 1895. That 2nd edition of "Uncle Remus; His Songs and His Sayings" became the basis for "Uncle Remus, or, The story of Mr. Fox and Brer Rabbit," illustrated by Harry Rountree and René Bull, published in London in 1906 and now extremely rare.

The  Books
Joel Chandler Harris [1848-1908] created the first version of the Uncle Remus character for the Atlanta Constitution in 1876; the Atlanta Constitution published "The Story of Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Fox As Told By Uncle Remus" on 20 July 1879; the first 34 Uncle Remus stories were published in book form as "Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings" in 1880, and became a national bestseller. Further collections of Uncle Remus tales were "Nights With Uncle Remus" [1883], "Uncle Remus and His Friends" [1892], "The Tar Baby and Other Rhymes of Uncle Remus" [1904], "Told By Uncle Remus: New Stories of The Old Plantation" [1905], and "Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit" [1907]; the last three books were published after Harris's death: "Uncle Remus and The Little Boy" [1910], "Uncle Remus Returns" [1918], and "Seven Tales of Uncle Remus" [1948]. There are 185 tales in the official 'canon'.

The  Author

Joel Chandler Harris [1848-1908]
"Write about what you know and care deeply about. When one puts one's self on paper - that is what is called good writing."
"I am in the prime of my senility."
— Joel Chandler Harris

Joel Chandler Harris was born in December 1848 at Eatonton, Georgia; he spent four years during the Civil War learning the profession of typesetter and reading all of the books
in the library at Turnwold Plantation; he worked at a series of newspapers in Georgia until 1876.

He met teenager Mary Esther LaRose in 1872; they were married in April 1873; the couple had two children, and stayed together until his death in 1908.

Harris was hired in 1876 at the Atlanta Constitution newspaper and remained there for 24 years. He retired from the newspaper in 1900 and continued writing; from 1907 until his death he edited Uncle Remus's Magazine. He died at age 59 from cirrhosis of the liver on 3 July 1908 at his home 'Wren's Nest' in West End, Atlanta, Georgia.

Joel Chandler Harris wrote for national magazines on the side, and began using visits by the fictional Uncle Remus character in his newspaper column. The first Uncle Remus plantation fable was published in the Atlanta Constitution newspaper in July 1879; the first 34 Uncle Remus stories were published in book form in 1880; the book was a national bestseller.
