And while I’m trying hard to speak the right word, I seem to hear a voice lifted above the rest saying 'you have made some of us happy'. And so I feel my heart fluttering and my lips trembling, and I have to bow silently and turn away and hurry back into the obscurity that fits me best."

The  Books
Joel Chandler Harris [1848-1908] created the first version of the Uncle Remus character for the Atlanta Constitution in 1876; the Atlanta Constitution published "The Story of Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Fox As Told By Uncle Remus" on 20 July 1879; the first 34 Uncle Remus stories were published in book form as "Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings" in 1880, and became a national bestseller. Further collections of Uncle Remus tales were "Nights With Uncle Remus" [1883], "Uncle Remus and His Friends" [1892], "The Tar Baby and Other Rhymes of Uncle Remus" [1904], "Told By Uncle Remus: New Stories of The Old Plantation" [1905], and "Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit" [1907]; the last three books were published after Harris's death: "Uncle Remus and The Little Boy" [1910], "Uncle Remus Returns" [1918], and "Seven Tales of Uncle Remus" [1948]. There are 185 tales in the official 'canon'.
