The Inklings of Oxford [1931-63]
The Inklings were a loose literary discussion society based at Magdalen College in Oxford, U.K. The group restarted in 1933 under leadership of C.S. Lewis; his tenure ended in late 1949; regular meetings 'during term' were on Thursday evenings at Lewis's or Tolkien's rooms and often on Tuesday midday at the Eagle and Child public house; after 1949, meetings were Thursday evenings at the Lamb and Flag across the street; regular meetings ended in 1963. Prominent and regular members included solicitor Owen Barfield, J.A.W. Bennett, Lord David Cecil, Nevill Coghill, Hugo Dyson, Adam Fox, Roger Lancelyn Green, Dr. Robert Havard, C.S. Lewis, his brother Warren Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, his son Christopher Tolkien, and publisher Charles Williams; sometimes attendees included John David Arnett, Sir Percy Bates, James Dundas-Grant, Jon Fromke, Colin Hardie, Gervase Mathew, R.B. McCallum, C.E. Stevens, John Wain, and Charles Leslie Wrenn. (Some accounts suggest that G.K. Chesterton and Dorothy L. Sayers were members, but neither actually attended any Inklings meetings.)
