  | Chrysler entry at Wikipedia |
  | "Chrysler's Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit's Coolest Creation" [2010] by Steve Lehto, Foreword by Jay Leno In 1964, Chrysler built a fleet of turbine cars – automobiles with jet engines – and loaned them out to members of the public. The exercise was a raging success: the engines would run on any flammable liquid and contained one-fifth the number of moving parts, requiring much less maintenance; the cars had no radiators or fan belts and never needed oil changes. Yet Chrysler crushed & burned most of the cars two years later. Questions about how and why the program & technologies were killed have still not been satisfactorily answered. Playboy Motor Car Corp. of Buffalo, NY [1946-50]
       | A trio of Buffalo, New York businessmen - Packard dealer Louis Horowitz, Pontiac engineer Charles Thomas, and service station owner Norman Richardson - managed to raise $50,000 in their quest to launch a new microcar company under the name Playboy Motor Car Corporation. They wanted to create a perfect second or third car, with a production target of 100,000 units per year, but they built only 97 cars before declaring bankruptcy. The problem was that most of the money went into the prototype, which debuted in the autumn of 1946 at the Statler Hotel in Buffalo. The prototype car had a rear-mounted 2.6-liter four-cyinder engine built by military supplier Hercules, and a three-passenger cabin with a canvas top (this prototype is on display at the Saratoga Automobile Museum today). By the summer of 1947, the design was changed to a front-wheel drive with engines made by Continental, and a manually operated retractable hard top; this concept became the 1948 Playboy A48, of which 91 were finished before a failed sale to Kaiser resulted in bankruptcy; all assets were auctioned off in 1950. |
