Melvil Dewey [1851-1931] created his proprietary system of library resource classification at the age of 21 while working at the Amherst College library; the Dewey Decimal System was first published in 1876 and is now widely used around the world. The system allows us to locate resources by topic assigned to one of 10 classes. The 10 main groups are 000–099 general works (including 092 for fiction, shelved by author); 100-199, philosophy & psychology; 200-299, religion; 300-399, social sciences; 400-499, language; 500-599, natural sciences & mathematics; 600-699, technology; 700-799, the arts; 800-899, literature & rhetoric; and 900-999, history, biography & geography.
The business computer became available in 1959, followed by the personal computer (Altair 8800 in 1973, Apple II in 1977, IBM PC in 1981), and the handheld personal digital assistant (PDA) in 1992. Amazon was founded in 1994 and the Kindle ebook reader was launched in 2008.
Given the choice between paper books and Kindle ebooks for a particular publication, more than half of Amazon's customers are choosing the ebook.
