U.S. chemical manufacturer Dupont was accused of profiteering during World War I (i.e. 'merchants of death') and so decided to attempt restoration of their corporate reputation
by producing a pro-American historical radio program (the public did not buy Dupont's products directly, it was essentially a public relations problem). The radio series ran on CBS
from 1935 to 1939 and on NBC from 1940 to 1953; the network television series ran on NBC from 1952 to 1953 and on ABC from 1953 to 1957 (total 133 TV episodes).

Two brothers set up a radio station in Minneapolis in 1926 to draw crowds to their wilting sandwich restaurant (call letters WLT for 'With Lettuce and Tomato'). The station is a success, and they are soon hiring local talent whose on-air personalities are not exactly the same as in real life: winsome child star Little Becky is a chain-smoking practical joker, the sports announcer is blind, and the always-cheerful songstress is confined to her wheelchair by polio and fat. The novel's hero is young straight man Francis White, who comes of age at the station and, as the station's success fades, goes on to greater things in television.
