The  Cisco Kid and  Pancho
       | the story |
"Here's adventure! Here's romance!
Here's O. Henry's famous Robin Hood of the Old West – The Cisco Kid!"
The 'Cisco Kid' character is based on O. Henry's "Heart of The West" book of Western short stories, published in 1907, which was in turn based on legends around Austin, Texas of gambler and gunman Ben Thompson.
At least one Cisco Kid feature film was made during the Silent Era. Fox Studios made a series of Cisco Kid sound features in the 30s, starring Warner Baxter [1889-1951] and Cesar Romero [1907-94], both pairing with Chris-Pin Martin [1893-1953] as sidekick 'Gordito'. The low-budget studio Monogram Pictures made a series of Cisco Kid features in the 1940s starring Duncan Renaldo [1904-80] and Gilbert Roland [1905-94]. They too shared a sidekick, this time Martin Garralaga [1894-1981].
Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carrillo [1880-1961] were paired at United Artists, starring in 5 features before making the popular network television show of 1950-56, which lasted 156 episodes – innovatively filmed in color although color TV receivers were not yet available.
In early 2001, a dozen videos of Cisco Kid features and tv episodes were put on the market, and the entire TV series is being released on DVD since 2004 – perhaps signs of a revival of interest in Cisco Kid.
