Francisco 'Pancho' Villa of Mexico
[1878-1923]
         | short profile |
Pancho Villa's so-called dying words – "Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something." – never happened. Villa was killed instantly, "A woman who is unfaithful deserves to be shot." — Pancho Villa
"I am not an educated man. I never had an opportunity to learn anything except how to fight." — Pancho Villa
"Never did I fight for the poor. I fought against the rich – which of course isn't at all the same thing. In any case, the fighting was the point.
struck by a fusillade of nine 'dum dum' (hollow-point) bullets in the front seat of his automobile.
You don't fight to become free – to fight is to be free. A man with a gun and the will to use it can't be mastered, he can only be killed."
— possible Villa quotation from the 1996 novel "The Friends of Pancho Villa" by James Carlos Blake

Villa, Columbus, Pershing
On 9 March 1916, Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa invaded the United States at Columbus, New Mexico; 500 to 600 Mexican soldiers killed eight U.S. Army soldiers and ten townspeople, burned part of the town, then retreated back across the border; about 80 Mexicans were killed in the attack. A quick response from cavalry soldiers camped nearby was led by then-Major Frank Tompkins {see 1934 book below}; the American forces boldly rode 15 miles into Mexico and engaged with Villa's rear guard four times. By March 15, U.S. Army Major General John J. Pershing assembled at Columbus and led an expeditionary force of 4,800 men into Mexico to capture Villa; the invasion of Mexico went 400 miles south of the border and various expeditions continued until February 1917, but all were unsuccesssful in locating Villa. These expeditions were the last major campaign by horse-riding U.S. Cavalry and also the first campaign by U.S. forces using tanks, trucks, and motorcycles.
