"Everything in the West is life!" — Frederic Remington
Painter, illustrator, writer and sculptor Frederic Remington shaped the image of the American cowboy
that still endures in America and around the world.
Born 4 October 1861, formally trained at the Yale School of Art and at the Art Students' League, Frederic Remington headed West due to health reasons. Although he was primarily an illustrator, working for many magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Outing, he also created over three thousand paintings.
He was a war correspondent for the Hearst newspapers during the Spanish-American War of 1898, and witnessed the assaults on San Juan Hill.
He died 26 December 1909, from complications following an appendectomy.
