The railroads of the United States have preserved steam locomotives and rolling stock from the beginning, including equipment from the 1850s (plus replicas of earlier equipment). Many towns have begun to realize that their railroad heritage is about the only thing to attract tourists (and tourist dollars), so new railroad museums continue to be established, often on the basis of one caboose or passenger car or the local train station.
