  | "Silver City [New Mexico] (Images of America)" [2013] by Carolyn O'Bagy Davis & Terrence M. Humble A historic parade of Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, miners, outlaws, and settlers resulted in a community celebrating a rich cultural blend. When silver was discovered in 1870, prospectors rushed in despite the danger from Apache Indians. Soon there were businesses, saloons, and homes. Silver City became the supply center for the widespread mining district with a brick plant and lumberyard. The SCD&PRR reached the town in 1883, the Santa Fe Railroad in 1886, and the two-foot narrow guage SCPA&M railway operated from 1889 to 1913 serving mines and smelters and the town of Pinos Altos.
