• 2018 April 12: Albuquerque, New Mexico became the latest city to decriminalize marijuana possession in small amounts; the ordinance signed into law by Mayor Keller makes possession of less than an ounce a misdemeanor with a fine of $25 (the plan is to make the bust not worth a cop's time, so that their attention can be on more serious crimes). • 2022 April 1: The end of cannabis prohibition in New Mexico as it started state-regulated retail sale of marijuana, joining 17 other states that have legalized adult-use recreational marijuana; the first day of legal recreational cannabis sales in New Mexico surpassed $2 million; sales over the first weekend were $5.2 million. New Mexico collected $2.4 million in cannabis taxes for the first month of legalized sales. By July, New Mexico sales of legal recreational cannabis were $21.2 million! • 2023 April: New Mexico’s adult-use recreational cannabis program brought in $300 million in sales in its first year. • 2024 March: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that cannabis sales for both adult recreational use and medical use have exceeded $1 billion.
