Susan Kandel was raised in California, lived on the East Coast for a time, then moved back to California for graduate school in art history at U.C.L.A., and has worked as an art historian and critic and as a college teacher since then. She married a professor at U.C.L.A. in 1991; they have two daughters and live in West Hollywood.
She was planning to begin writing a mystery novel, and looking for inspiration, when a weekend visit to Ventura, California and the discovery of the building where Earl Stanley Gardner had his law offices triggered the creation of the Cece Caruso character and her first published mystery in 2004.
