Charlie Chan novels

works about Charlie Chan

Honolulu homicide detective Charlie Chan, as played by Swedish actor Warner Oland [1879-1938]

"Persistence. That's the secret of a good detective."
— Earl Derr Biggers

The character of Charlie Chan, a proverb-spouting Chinese-American homicide detective
based in Honolulu, Hawaii was created by Earl Derr Biggers in 6 novels [1925-32]
and appeared in 60+ movies [1931-81] and a televison series [1957-58].

The six Charlie Chan novels were published by playwright Earl Derr Bigger [1884-1933] between 1925 and 1932, based on a real-life Honolulu policeman named Chang Apana [1887-1933]. The fictional Chinese-American police sergeant lives with his wife and 14 children on Punchbowl Hill overlooking Honolulu & Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. His various older sons try to help him solve each case, with bumbling heroics and attention to cute women, and fatherly forbearance.
Keye Luke began as Number One Son Lee in 1935; Layne Tom Jr. first appeared as subteen Number 5 Son Willy in 1937 (and three more times); Victor Sen Yung came in as Number Two Son Jimmy with Sidney Toler in 1938 (13 films), then played Number 3 Son Tommy (5 films); Frances Chan appeared as daughter Frances in only one film, 1944's "Black Magic"; Edwin Luke played Number 4 Son Eddie just once in 1945's "Jade Mask"; and Benson Fong played Number 3 Son Tommy 4 times (1945-46). The Chan family appears en masse in "At The Circus" [1936].

The humble and proverb-quoting persona of Charlie Chan was established in the novels; three films based on a novel - two silents in 1926 & 1927, a sound film in 1929 - were produced before the 16 successful films starring Warner Oland, (1931-37) that were made at Fox. More-or-less innocent (or unconscious) racism was included in the films from the beginning, which many today find hard to take; the addition of Afro-American sidekick Mantan Moreland in later years did not help.

When Oland died, the series was continued with Sidney Toler (1938-46); 11 films were made at Fox before post-war jitters about Asians as film stars found the Chan series moved to B-movie studio Monogram, which made 11 more films starring Toler. Upon his death from cancer, Monogram brought in Roland Winters, who made 6 films (1947-49); the budgets got smaller and the scripts got worse, and the Charlie Chan series of films ended.
Several radio series aired from 1932 to 1948; one such program was serialized scripts based on the novels. A half-hour TV series starring J. Carrol Naish ran for 39 episodes in 1957-58. An animated TV series ran for 16 episodes in 1972 with Key Luke as Charlie's voice.

Since 1949, only a few attempts were made to make Charlie Chan feature films or TV movies. One in 1981 starred Sir Peter Ustinov. Asian-American film star Lucy Liu has been attached to a new film scheduled for 2011? release, where she would play Charlie's granddaughter. (Film still stuck in 'development hell' as-of 2017.)
