The Statue
revolving Rocky & Bullwinkle statue in West Hollywood, California      The headquarters building for Jay Ward's company was/is on the eastern end of the Sunset Strip, in West Hollywood, California. Lots of tourist traffic passes by, especially on weekends. so advertising billboards in the area are prime real estate. Around 1961, the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada put up a billboard directly across the street from Jay Ward's offices, and included a revolving statue of a showgirl in a bathing suit holding her cowgirl hat in the air. Practical joker Jay Ward naturally responded by erecting a statue of Bullwinkle in an old-style bathing suit holding Rocky in the air; the Bullwinkle statue also revolved, and whenever the cowgirl's costume changed, the Bullwinkle statue was repainted to match. The Rocky and Bullwinkle statue was last seen on the Strip in 2013; the original artist is unknown, but it was restored by Ric Scozzari in 2014. Later that year, the restored statue was unveiled as the center piece of “The Jay Ward Legacy Exhibit” at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. The restored art installation was donated in 2015 by the Jay Ward Family for City of West Hollywood’s Urban Art Collection.

The spinning 14-foot, 700-pound statue of Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose has come back to the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood after being away for about 7 years, and now stands prominently on the corner where Sunset Boulevard splits into Holloway Drive; it was quickly covered from public view in preparation for a proper unveiling ceremony at the end of March 2020
