June Lockhart (who played Timmy's mom for 6 seasons) spoke in an interview about the unbelievable things that they asked Lassie to do.
In one episode, Mom/June was caught in a bear trap and told Lassie to go home and get a C-clamp (she pantomimed a 'C' with her hand).
Lassie galloped home, fetched a knife, and galloped back. Mom/June tried to free herself with the knife, and when it didn't work,
she again told Lassie to go back home and get the C-clamp. The second time, Lassie got it right.

There is a case for two early versions of Lassie the Dog. The 1859 story "The Half-brothers" written by British writer Elizabeth Gaskell tells of a female collie dog named Lassie that rescues two boys in a snowstorm (one boy dies).
There is also the legend of a half-collie dog named Lassie that was owned by the landlord of the Pilot Boat pub in the port of Lyme Regis. On New Year’s Day in 1915 the Royal Navy battleship Formidable was torpedoed by a German submarine in stormy seas off South Devon, with the loss of more than 500 men. A life raft containing bodies was blown along the coast to Lyme Regis; the Pilot Boat pub offered its cellar as a mortuary. Lassie saved one of the men by warming his body with hers - all were amazed when the sailor revived. The story was repeated over and over, as England needed such a heartwarming tale to counter the many defeats on land and sea during that part of the war.

English-American author Eric Knight's tale of the fictional Lassie was first published as a short story in The Saturday Evening Post in 1938 and expanded to full novel length in "Lassie Come Home", published in July 1940. That story has the dog being sold due to hard times and then returning home over a long and arduous trek.
The 1943 feature film by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios starring Roddy McDowell (age 15) and Elizabeth Taylor (at age 11) was a smash hit, and was followed by six sequels. "The Lassie Show" ran on network radio from 1948 to 1950. The "Lassie" TV series ran from 1954 to 1974, and then was rerun in syndication. Filmation produced a 15-episode animated TV series called "Lassie's Rescue Rangers" that ran for two seasons on ABC-TV, 1973-75. The half-hour color TV series "The New Lassie" [1989-92] was set in the suburbs. The Japanese animé TV series "Famous Dog Lassie (Meiken Rasshï)" ran for 26 episodes in 1996. The Canadian TV series "Lassie" [1997-99] was set in a small town in Vermont.

The rights to the character are long owned by Classic Media, which was recently purchased by DreamWorks SKG and renamed DreamWorks Classics. They took a survey and discovered that Lassie has the highest recognition of any of their characters, including over 70 percent recognition in Mainland China. So DreamWorks is making big plans for a 'reboot' of the character on film and television. ('Stay tuned', as they say.)
