Written first as a screenplay, which was rejected by the studios; so Nash decided to write a novelization (which took two weeks); the book received a $10,000 advance, was published in both hardcover & paperback, and was a small hit, so the studios bid for the movie rights; the winning studio asked Nash to write a screenplay, so he handed over the rejected screenplay and got paid for it; Nash worked with screenwriter Schenk before Nash's death in 2000 at age 87
