Here is a fun game to play: When the counter clerk asks for a name on your sandwich order, say 'Spartacus'. Then when they call out the name, you stand
and raise a fist and shout 'I am Spartacus!'. You win if somebody else gets in the game and stands and likewise shouts 'I am Spartacus!'.

"We'll free every slave in every town and region. Can anybody get a bigger army than that?"
— line in the movie "Spartacus" [1960] as written by Dalton Trumbo [1905-76]

History  &  Synopsis
In the year 73 BC, the Thracian Spartacus broke out of the gladiatorial training school at Capua in Campania. A charismatic leader, he formed an army of runaway slaves and people with little to lose, and defeated the Roman troops under the praetor C. Claudius Glaber. With this minor victory, Spartacus' army swelled to 70,000 and rampaged throughout Campania assaulting a number of cities and defeating two consular armies. Terrified lest the revolt spread across the republic, the Roman government assigned M. Licinius Crassus the task of crushing the revolt. Crassus' first attempt to capture Spartacus failed, and the Roman senate called upon Pompey to help him. Together, they cornered Spartacus and brought him to battle near the source of the river Silarus. During the battle, Spartacus was killed and his army defeated, ending the Third Servile War. Crassus crucified 6,000 prisoners as an example to others who might think of revolt. The 'frame' in the novel has historical and fictional Roman patricians and leaders just a few weeks after the failed slave rebellion led by the gladiator Spartacus telling each other what they know about the events of that rebellion.
History  of  The  Novel  &  Movie
The original book was written while blacklisted author Howard Fast [1914-2003] was in prison for refusing to 'name names' to the House Un-American Activities Committee; he self-published the book in 1951 after many publishers of the time refused to take on the blacklisted author; Kirk Douglas's anti-blacklist movie in 1960 provided momentum for movie tie-in editions, which were very popular.
Kirk Douglas was the driving force behind the 1960 movie, partly because co-producer & director William Wyler chose Charlton Heston over Douglas for the title role in "Ben Hur" [1959]. Howard Fast had problems with script format writing, so Douglas brought in blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, which created the problem of assigning script credit; Douglas decided to push back against the blacklist by announcing that Trumbo had written the film; after President Kennedy walked thru a line of anti-Communist protestors to see the movie, the blacklist was essentially ended.
Filmed in widescreen Technirama (similar to VistaVision) in California and in Spain. The film won four Academy Awards and became the biggest moneymaker in Universal Studios' history, until surpassed by "Airport" [1970]. By 1991, the camera negative for this movie was completely faded and unusable: nothing could be done to produce any printing material from that element for the intended restoration & re-issue; color separation elements made on black-and-white film in the early 1960s were used instead; also, a lost audio track of the censored bath seduction scene required that expert mimic Anthony Hopkins dub the dialogue for Olivier. Approximately four minutes of the movie are lost, because of Universal Pictures' mishandling of prints in the 1970s; these scenes relate to the character of Gracchus, including a scene where he committed suicide; the audio tracks of these scenes have survived.
"Spartacus" won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Peter Ustinov), Best Color Cinematography (Russell Metty, although Kubrick did most of the work), Best Color Art Direction, Best Color Costume Design, and Oscar nominations for Best Film Editing & Best Music Score; also won Golden Reel Award from Motion Picture Sound Editors; WGA-nominated for Best American Drama Script. The movie's line "I am Spartacus" was voted as #64 of 'The 100 Greatest Movie Lines' by readers of Premiere Magazine in 2007. In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the U.S. Library of Congress as being 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant'.
