"The American" [Focus Features Sept 2010]
  | PREDICTION 9/2010: Roger Ebert compares the film to Jean-Pierre Melville's "Le Samourai" [1967], but for me it resonates more with Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless" [1960]. The direction is superb, the script is as clean as the rifle that Jack constructs – figure Oscar noms for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and for the cinematography of Martin Ruhe. This is a noir love story. A professional assassin's attempt to kill an American in Sweden is unsuccessful; he flees to Italy and hides out in a mountaintop village. He is a maker of illegal weapons, and can trust no one, not even the beautiful prostitute who has fallen in love with him. Co-produced by & starring George Clooney; directed by Anton Corbijn; script by Rowan Joffe, based on a novel by Martin Booth; also starring Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli, Johan Leysen, Bruce Altman, Irina Björklund, Samuli Vauramo, Filippo Timi & Björn Granath — goldurned Academy: not even one Oscar nomination!
