"In a day when our attention spans are being degraded by geometric proportions at a lightspeed rate, the fact that many thinking people still celebrate
the writings of C.S. Lewis can afford us some hope for the future." — Robert C. Stroud, on his C.S. Lewis Chronicles fansite

Lewis enlisted in the British Army in 1917; commissioned into the Third Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry and sent to the Somme Valley in France where he experienced trench warfare; wounded by badly-aimed British shell in April 1918 and recovered by October; assigned to duty in Andover, England and demobilised in December 1918.

Lewis was elected a fellow of Magdalen College Oxford in 1925 and had rooms in the New Building until the end of 1954 when he was elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University.

C.S. Lewis,  J.R.R. Tolkien,  and  The Inklings
The Inklings were a loose literary discussion society based at Magdalen College in Oxford, U.K. The group restarted in 1933 under leadership of C.S. Lewis; his tenure ended in late 1949; regular meetings 'during term' were on Thursday evenings at Lewis's or Tolkien's rooms and often on Tuesday midday at the Eagle and Child public house; after 1949, meetings were Thursday evenings at the Lamb and Flag public house across the street; regular meetings ended in 1963. Prominent and regular members included solicitor Owen Barfield, J.A.W. Bennett, Lord David Cecil, Nevill Coghill, Hugo Dyson, Adam Fox, Roger Lancelyn Green, Dr. Robert Havard, C.S. Lewis, his brother Warren Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, his son Christopher Tolkien, and publisher Charles Williams.
