Brief  History / Timeline

  • 1400s: Coffeehouses opened in Constantinople and spread throughout the Middle East.
  • 1735 Johann Sebastian Bach’s Coffee Cantata {Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht (Be still, stop chattering), BWV 211}, a miniature comic opera about a young woman who wants to drink coffee and her mean father who won’t let her.
  • 1840: French inventor Mme. Vassieux popularized the siphon coffee brewer.
  • 1889: Hanson Goodrich, a farmer in Illinois, patented the stovetop percolator.
  • 1895: Post Cereal Company founder C.W. Post created the Postum caffeine-free powdered coffee substitute beverage; the basic product is made from roasted wheat bran, wheat, and molasses.
  • 1908: A German woman named Melitta Bentz invented the coffee filter, using blotting paper from her son’s notebook as a prototype; the company that she founded, Melitta, is still controlled by her family.
  • 1929: Milanese designer Attilio Calimani patented the French press.
  • 1938: Nestlé debuted its instant coffee product Nescafé in Switzerland.
  • 1941: German chemist Peter Schlumbohm invented the Chemex Coffeemaker, an hourglass-shaped pour-over coffee maker inspired by Bauhaus design.
  • 1972: Launch of Mr. Coffee, the first automatic drip coffee maker.
  • 1998: Keurig introduced its single-cup commercial coffeemaker for the office; models for home use were added in 2004.
  • 2005: Alan Adler invented the AeroPress.
  • 2012: Founding of Cometeer Frozen Coffee Pods in Gloucester, Massachusetts
