American  Literature  of  The  XXth  Century
             | short history |
There are half a dozen 'Best 100 List' pages here at Spirit of America Bookstore, and it was fun coding those pages: I learned a lot. But the real purpose of such pages is presenting to the visitor works of fiction and of non-fiction, and even of poetry, that are considered important. Now it is my turn!
This page of books that I say qualify as 'American Literature' of the XXth Century is paired with a similar page for the XIXth Century.
(For the XXIst Century, go here.)

"The Jungle: The Lie of The American Dream" [1906]
by Upton Sinclair [1878-1968]
author entry at Wikipedia
novel entry at Wikipedia
"What Uncle Tom's Cabin did for black slaves, The Jungle has a large chance to do for the white slaves of today."
Jack London [1876-1916]
  | Sinclair investigated conditions at the meat-packing plants and slums of Chicago and decided that the best way to expose the situation was with a novel. The book was published in February 1906 by Doubleday, Page & Company and caused a sensation; within months, President Theodore Roosevelt got laws passed establishing health & sanita-tion standards for meat processors. Sinclair was disappointed that the labor & personal health issues were not addressed, and later commented that he "aimed at the public's heart and by accident hit its stomach."
