"Classics Illustrated" Comic Books
           | history |            |
The appeal of early comic books led Albert Lewis Kanter [1897-1973] to use the new medium to introduce young and reluctant readers to
'great literature'; the first issue of the "Classics Illustrated" comics was published in 1941, the final Issue #167 was published in 1962.
Since then, various companies have published reprints and-or new titles, both on paper and in e-book/flip-book formats.
History  of  The  Publishers
The series' name was changed to 'Classics Illustrated' with issue #35 "The Last Days of Pompeii" [March 1947]; spin-off series were 'Classics Illustrated Junior' (1953-69), 'Specials', and 'The World Around Us'. Kanter's last new title was issue #167 "Faust" [August 1962], while foreign editions and Junior series editions continued.
In 1967, Kanter sold his company to publisher Patrick Frawley (also an executive at Eversharp-Schick in California); his Frawley Corporation finally published the last titles "In Freedom's Cause" and "Negro Americans" in 1969. Schick Sunn Classics produced eight TV movies branded with 'Classics Illustrated' from 1977 to 1982 {see below}.
In 1988, First Comics partnered with Berkley Publishing to acquire the rights to Classics Illustrated and announced that it was reviving the brand with all-new adaptations; after some delays, the comic book series returned after a nearly 30-year hiatus in 1990, but lasted only a little over a year, publishing 27 issues.
Acclaim Entertainment [1994-2004] (absorbed by Valiant Comics [est. 1989], then by D.M.G. Entertainment [est. 1994]) published a series of recolored reprints of the Gilberton issues in 1997-1998 in a digest size format with accompanying study notes by literary scholars. The Acclaim series favored Mark Twain with reprints of "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", "Pudd'nhead Wilson", "The Prince and The Pauper", and "Tom Sawyer"; the series lasted 62 issues.
In 2007, Papercutz [est. 2005] acquired the Classics Illustrated license and announced that they would begin publishing new graphic novels ('Classics Illustrated Deluxe') as well as reprints of the First Comics series from 1990-1991. The new modern adaptations were largely produced in France; Papercutz published 12 volumes – including "The Wind In The Willows", "Frankenstein", "Treasure Island", and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" from 2008 to 2014.
Papercutz published the First Comics reprint series of adaptations in a different order from the originals and emphasized some of the later, low-circulation volumes; 19 issues were published (out of the original 27) from 2008 to 2014.
Trajectory, Inc. [est. 2011], based in Marblehead, Massachusetts, issued the first digital editions of Gilberton Classics Illustrated regular and Junior lines in 2011; Trajectory was granted the exclusive worldwide rights to produce, distribute, and license the brand in 2014, but not much has happened.
