Robin Hood and the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest may never have existed, but the legend that arose in the XIVth Century is a persistent one,
as is the concept of 'robbing from the rich and giving to the poor' {i.e. paying the taxes of the oppressed peasants}.

"Robin Hood represents natural justice, and his association with nature helps that."  — Stephen T. Knight

"Rise and rise again until lambs become lions." ~~ Robin Hood

The  Legend  of  Robin  Hood

The basic story of Robin Hood has numerous variations, but the root is that Robert/Robyn/Robin is somehow wronged by the king's men and declared an outlaw. He finds refuge in Barnsdale Forest or Sherwood Forest and seeks revenge on the usurper Bad Prince John by robbing wealthy travelers or convoys of taxmen. Robin earns the enmity of the Sheriff of Nottingham for his lawlessness; he earns the admiration of the peasants because he gives away his spoils to pay the taxes of the oppressed poor. He woos Maid Marian, who acts as a spy within the aristocracy. The men who join his Merry Band include various yeomen and farmers, clerics (Friar Tuck), and the roving minstrel Alan-a-Dale. The basic story ends when King Richard returns from the Crusades and deposes his corrupt brother Prince John and then pardons Robin for defending the true king's interests.

Historical  Events  &  Legends

The historic Richard Plantagenet was born in 1157 and succeeded his father as King of England in July 1189; Richard was captured in December 1192 during his return from the Third Crusade and ransomed and released in February 1194. During his ten-year reign, he spent only six months in England, and never learned the language. He was killed in France in March 1199 and succeeded by his brother John. The dissatisfied northern nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta in June 1215; John died of dysentery in October 1216.

The oldest-known mention of the outlaw Robin Hood is in the XVth-century ballad "A Gest of Robyn Hode" [Child Ballad 117; circa 1450]. The 'Gest' is source for many of the familiar features of the Robin Hood story, tho it has Robin living in Barnsdale Forest rather then Sherwood Forest. Many of the basic characters - Little John, Will Scarlet, Much the Miller’s Son - first appeared in the anonymous poem. The 'Gest' refers to ‘King Edward’, not Richard or John, and this puts Robin Hood later in English history, some time after 1272 when Edward I ascended the throne. • entry at Wikipedia

The idea of Robin being an outlawed nobleman, Robin of Locksley, derives from Sir Walter Scott’s celebrated medieval romance "Ivanhoe", published in 1820.
Howard Pyle [1853-1911] wrote & illustrated the classic "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", published in 1883. Paul Creswick [1866-1947] wrote "The Adventures of Robin Hood: An English Legend" [1917 novel] which was beautifully illustrated by N.C. Wyeth [1882-1945].
Since then, the Robin Hood legend has mostly been kept alive by motion pictures and television, as well as new romance novels and historical fiction.
The City of Nottingham and surrounding towns rely on the Robin Hood legend for tourism dollars.
