The Legend of The Golem
After the year 1900, the oral traditions of The Golem were reproduced or expanded in various media. Such modern literary works include: "The Golem" [1914 novel] by Gustav Meyrink; "El Golem" poem [1964] by Jorge Luis Borges; "The Golem" [1969 novel] by Isaac Bashevis Singer; "Golem XIV" [1981 novel] by Stanislaw Lem; and "The Golem" children's book [1983] written by Elie Wiesel.
Works about The Golem on film include: Paul Wegener's silent film trilogy - "The Golem" [1915 lost film], "The Golem and The Dancing Girl" sequel comedy [1917 lost film],
and "The Golem: How He Came Into The World" horror prequel [Germany 1920]; "Le Golem" [1936] a French/Czechoslovakian film directed by Julien Duvivier; "It!" horror film [1967] directed by Herbert J. Leder – among several others.
The earliest tales in literature of an artificial man include the Legend of The Golem, recorded in the Jewish Talmud circa 200 C.E. The Golem is created from clay or mud, which is described in many ways, including by magic spell. The Golem is unable to speak, though it understands whatever language is spoken to it. The Golem is controlled by placing a word written on paper or other material in The Golem's mouth or forehead, and deactivated by removing that writing. The earliest known written tales of The Golem date to circa 1200 C.E. Oral versions of the legend existed in Poland and Prague circa 1580, in Germany circa 1625, and in Lithuania 1750-1820.

The Tin Woodman of Oz
You know the Tin Woodman from the "The Wizard of Oz" [1900] and other books by L. Frank Baum [1856-1919] and from the classic 1939 Movie starring Judy Garland, with Jack Haley as Tin Woodman. There were also several books featuring the Tin Woodman, who is given the name Nick Chopper. For example, in the second Oz book, "The Marvelous Land of Oz" [1904], Tin Woodman rules the Winkie Kingdom (succeeding the deceased Wicked Witch of The West); in "Ozma of Oz" [book #5 = 1907], he commands Ozma's army; he is in "The Scarecrow and The Tin Woodman", one of Baum's "Little Wizard Stories of Oz" [1913] for younger readers; and in his own book, "The Tin Woodman of Oz" [book #15 = 1918], he locates his lost love.

Tik-Tok of Oz
    | The mechanical man Tik-Tok first appears in "Ozma of Oz" [book #3 = 1907] by L. Frank Baum [1856-1919]. Shipwrecked Dorothy Gale and Billina the Hen flee from a gang of rowdy Wheelers and unlock a door where Tik-Tok is imprisoned; Dorothy winds him up and he rescues them from the Wheelers. They visit the spoiled Princess Langwidere, Ruler of the Land of Ev; Princess Ozma and friends appear on a mission to rescue the Evian royal family, captured by the Nome King. Dorothy beats the Nome King and his army, Oz celebrates the victory, and Dorothy is transported to Australia and reunited with her Uncle Henry.
Baum wrote a stageplay originally based on "Ozma of Oz", but it was heavily revised and the name was changed to "The Tik-Tok Man of Oz". The story of the Shaggy Man's quest to rescue his brother from the Nome King was produced as a musical stageplay in 1913 by Oliver Morosco, with music by Louis F. Gottschalk; it was popular in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but panned by critics in Chicago; although the play was making money in Chicago, producer Morosco decided not to open on Broadway; after Chicago, the company took the play on the road for five months. A complete playscript does not exist, but fans cobbled together a version that was performed 'one time only' at Winkie Con 50 in San Diego in 2014. Tik-Tok is the title character of Oz book #8 published in 1914 by L. Frank Baum [1856-1919], but he is essentially a sidekick on the quest by the Shaggy Man to rescue his brother from the Nome King; others on the quest include Betsy Bobbin and her mule Hank, the Rose Princess Ozga, and Polychrome the Rainbow's Daughter. Color and b&w illustrations in the original book are by John R. Neill. • book entry at WikipediaKindle Edition from Flying Fish [8/2014] for $99¢ CreateSpace 9x6 pb [6/2016] for $9.99 Del Rey mass pb [10/85] out of print/used HarperCollins Books of Wonder 9x6¾ hardcover [4/96] for $19.24 available as free online etext at Internet Archive |

They bring the Gump to life and escape, then confront the Nome King; he becomes enraged and transforms into a monster; Billina gets excited and lays an egg, which the monster eats; but since eggs are toxic to Nome people, the monster is killed and the Land of Oz returns to its former beautiful appearance. two books published in 1923 by Gaston Leroux [1868-1927]
    | Gaston Leroux is most famous for "Phantom of The Opera" [1910] and for his detective novels; in 1923 he released the novel "La Poupée Sanglante (The Bloody Doll)" which was published in English in 1934 with the title "The Kiss That Killed"; later in 1923, he released "La Machine à Assassiner", which was published in English in 1934 as "The Machine To Kill". Based on the jagged trans-lation {using Bing Translator} of various book blurbs, it seems that the daughter of a watchmaker is engaged to a scientist who is working on an automaton named Gabriel. But she is in love with a poet that she has not met; the poet is a neighbor who stays hidden because of extreme ugliness, while catching glimpses of the girl, because he is in love with her. She meets him and is repulsed. Some-how the poet is arrested for a series of murders and executed, and his brain is installed in the scientist's automaton. The second book opens with the detective realizing that although the man that he arrested is now dead, the murders are continuing. A 6-episode mini-series aired on France's Antenne 2 Network in 1976 that was based on both books. And a musical stageplay of "La Poupée Sanglante" has had several recent performance runs at Theatre Huchette in Paris, France; show is co-written by Didier Bailly & Edouard Thié-baut, who both also act in the play. |

The 'Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot' Children's Books
Since the three Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot books published in 2000 were about a robot only 2½ feet tall, readers convinced the author to alter the book titles to 'Mighty Robot'
Martin Ontiveros, the original illustrator of the first seven books, was replaced in 2014 by Dan Santat; author Pilkey had Santat redraw all seven books, which replaced the prior versions.
Pilkey also writes the Captain Underpants Series, the Dog Man Series, and, under the pseudonym Sue Denim, the Dumb Bunnies Series.
