Transcandentalism
|          | short history |
Transcendentalism was the New England movement of the 1830s and 1840s that brought together
Romanticism in literature and social reform in politics. Its partisans argued for the rights of women,
the abolition of slavery, and, in some cases, the socialization of labor and equal distribution of profits.
They were America’s first avant-garde.

  | "Hawthorne's Fuller Mystery" [1998] by Thomas R. Mitchell At the time of her death, Margaret Fuller [1810-50] was considered an important figure in the Trans-cendentalist movement, especially in the realm of feminism. Julian Hawthorne performed rather a 'hatchet job' on Margaret in several books about his father (so as to whitewash Nathaniel). This book examines the record within Nathaniel Hawthorne's writings, and restores Margaret as a major influence on Hawthorne and on the Transcendental circle in Massachussets.
