Donald Trump is such a chameleon that the negative nicknames keep changing as he commits another new atrocity on social media and then lies about it in multiple ways. Trump was impeached twice by Congress and McConnell's fascist Senators blocked any actual trial. Donald Trump is finally being made accountable for some of his crimes; his first serious indictment - related to the hush money payments in 2016 - was in March 2023.

"When Donald Trump's Secret Service detail 'drew straws' about who would go inside the New York City courthouse
for Trump's booking and arraignment, did the winners or the losers get the assignment ??" — G.E. Nordell

"It's like watching a train wreck in real life, but the train wreck is our democracy." — Amanda McKay, Daily Kos

Overview  of  The  Trump  Criminal  Trials

Even among the especially well informed, five has been the magic number of criminally-tinged investigations implicating former President Donald J. Trump:

First, there is the investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) into the classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago. [lead investigator Jack Smith] { see below }

Second, there is DOJ’s investigation of the effort to stymie the transfer of power following the 2020 election, including the January 6th insurrection
at the U.S. Capitol [Jack Smith] { see below }

Third is the investigation - led by Fani Willis, the district attorney for Fulton County, Georgia - into election fraud in that state, arising from Trump’s having asked
the Georgia secretary of state to 'find' enough votes to hand him an Electoral College win there. { see below }

Fourth is the set of investigations (some criminal, some civil) into Trump’s various corporate enterprises . . .
(Alvin Bragg, Letitia James each in separate probes) { see below }

Fifth is the long-running investigation that DA Bragg is leading into the alleged campaign hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. { see below }

But as it turns out, there’s a sixth: one that involves both D.O.J. and the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), and it concerns Trump's conduct
since he left office and after he was expelled from Twitter and launched his own social media platform, Truth Social. { see below }

both impeachments
December 2019 and January 2021
Donald Trump was impeached twice by Congress: first, for abuse of power and for obstruction of justice, and second, for 'incitement of insurrection';
he was acquitted in both cases by Sen. Mitch McConnell and his lockstep Republican Party without any actual trial.

Hillary Clinton conspiracy lawsuit
September 2022 to January 2023
In September 2022, U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks threw out the Florida lawsuit alleging a vast conspiracy against Trump in the 2016 presidential election, then fined his lawyer Alina Habba $50,000 to pay the legal fees of one of the defendants, Charles Dolan. In January 2023, Judge Middlebrooks ordered former President Donald Trump and lawyer Habba to pay $938,000 in sanctions to 31 other defendants, including Trump's 2016 Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton. Middlebrooks wrote in a scathing ruling that "[The lawsuit] was completely frivolous, both factually and legally, and . . . was brought in bad faith for an improper purpose. No reasonable lawyer would have filed it."

E. Jean Carroll defamation and battery lawsuits
since Nov 2019
former Elle Magazine advice columnist (1993-2019)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Jean_Carroll
Carroll's lawyer Roberta A. Kaplan (9/2020)

E. Jean Carroll  Lawsuits  Timeline

  • mid-1990s: Donald Trump allegedly raped columnist E. Jean Carroll {E.J.C.} in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in New York City
  • Nov 2019: E.J.C. filed a federal lawsuit against Donald Trump for sexual assault, battery, and defamation.
  • Nov 2022: E.J.C. filed a new defamation suit after Trump said in a Truth Social post that her claims were "a Hoax and a lie" adding "This woman is not my type!".
  • 2023 Wed April 26: Former Elle advice columnist E. Jean Carroll testified that Donald Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room after asking her advice on buying a present. She said that they had a conversation that was "very joshing" until Trump led her into a dressing room, supposedly to try on lingerie; he pushed her in, locked the door, and then, she said, "Donald Trump raped me". Trump responded by postin that Carroll's story a "made-up SCAM".
  • 2023 May 9: After deliberating less than three hours, a Manhattan jury found that Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll and subsequently defamed her, and ordered the former president to pay her close to $5 million; Trump is liable for $2.02 million for sexual abuse and $2.98 million for defamation. Trump refused to take the stand during the trial. The jury did not find Trump liable for rape and also declined to rule on a charge of forcible touching. Trump’s lawyer said that he would appeal as his client took to Truth Social again to decry “the greatest witch hunt of all time”.
  • 2023 May 10: Donald Trump said during a C.N.N. town hall telecast that E. Jean Carroll was a "wack job" and that her story was "fake".
  • 2023 Mon May 22: As part of a separate defamation suit that she filed in 2019, E.J.C. asked a Manhattan federal court for $10 million in new damages from former President Donald Trump for insults that he directed at her on C.N.N. a day after she won $5 million from Trump in her sexual abuse and defamation complaint.
  • 2023 June 27: Former President Trump countersued E. Jean Carroll for defamation after being found liable for sexually abusing her; Carroll’s attorney said that Trump’s counterclaim is “nothing more than his latest effort to delay accountability”.
  • 2023 Tue July 11: The Justice Department said that it will no longer shield former President Donald Trump in E. Jean Carroll's defamation lawsuit by no longer certifying that he was acting within his presidential duties in 2019 when he denied rape allegations by Carroll, claiming that she was "not my type". The U.S. government stance gave Trump absolute immunity. D.O.J. lawyers told the presiding judge in Carroll's federal law suit that due to guidance from an appellate court and Carroll's success in a New York state defamation suit "there is no longer a sufficient basis to conclude" that Trump's comments were made out of a desire to serve the U.S. government.
  • 2023 Mon Aug 7: U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan dismissed Donald Trump's defamation counterclaim against writer E. Jean Carroll, saying that her statement that the former president had raped her was "substantially true". After the May verdict, Carroll stated that Trump had raped her, prompting Trump to file his counterclaim. Judge Kaplan dismissed Trump's counterclaim and said that Trump's filing failed to show that Carroll made her statement out of malice.
  • 2023 Wed Sept 6: U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that former President Donald Trump is liable for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll in 2019 when, as president, he denied her allegation that he sexually assaulted her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s; the ruling specified that the previous defamation trial related to the same allegations had established in May that Trump sexually abused Carroll, so the second trial will "be limited to the issue of damages only". Carroll was awarded $5 million in damages in the first trial; Trump denies wrongdoing and is appealing that verdict.

    Trump lawsuit against C.N.N.
    October 2022 to July 2023

  • 2022 Oct 3: A $475 million lawsuit filed in the Southern District of Florida against C.N.N. claimed that the network had defamed former President Donald Trump by referring to his false claims about the 2020 presidential election as a "Big Lie", which Trump alleged created an unfair tie between himself and the terminology used by the Nazis.
  • 2023 Friday July 28: Florida U.S. District Judge Raag Singhal dismissed the lawsuit against C.N.N. ruling that the claim was invalid, writing that "C.N.N.'s statements, while repugnant, were not, as a matter of law, defamatory"; Singhal added that "C.N.N.'s use of the phrase 'the Big Lie' . . . does not give rise to a plausible inference that Trump advocates the persecution and genocide of Jews".

    'indictment of Donald Trump' entry at Wikipedia

  • 2018: Michael Cohen, former personal lawyer & fixer for Donald Trump, pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the 2016 campaign hush money arrangement.
  • 2022 November: The DA's office under Alvin Bragg revived scrutiny of the hush-money affair, after delaying it to focus on potential crimes tied to the valuation of corporate assets by Trump's company.
  • 2023 Mon Jan 30: The office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg started presenting evidence to a grand jury regarding former President Donald Trump's role in paying alleged hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels. Daniels said during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign that she had an affair with him in 2006. Michael Cohen, then Trump's personal lawyer and fixer, paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet. Trump denies ordering the payoff or having an affair with Daniels.
  • 2023 Wed March 15: Stormy Daniels met with prosecutors investigating hush money that was paid to her by former President Donald Trump's representatives shortly before his 2016 election. The news arrived as the ex-Trump lawyer who arranged the $130,000 payment, Michael Cohen, testified for a second day before the New York grand jury reviewing evidence in the case. Cohen has said he would cooperate with prosecutors, but not to seek revenge against Trump. "This is not about him. This is about holding accountability, truth to power, and everything else in between," Cohen said.
  • 2023 Mon March 27: The long-running Manhattan grand jury examination of hush money that former President Trump allegedly paid to porn star Stormy Daniels heard testimony from a key witness, former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker. Former Trump fixer Michael Cohen reportedly paid Daniels $130,000 on Trump's behalf shortly before Trump's 2016 election, in an attempt to get her to stop talking publicly about her claim that she had an affair with Trump years earlier. Pecker and the Enquirer's top editor helped arrange the deal. Pecker previously testified in January to the grand jury, which was impaneled early this year.
  • 2023 Thu March 30: A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict former President Donald Trump over his role in hush money payments to a porn star during his 2016 presidential campaign. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's investigation has focused on whether Trump's company falsified records to cover up the checks reimbursing Cohen. Trump said that he is "a completely innocent person" and accused DA Bragg, a Democrat, of a "Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history". Trump is the first former president to face criminal charges, and is expected to surrender in NYC on Tuesday.
  • 2023 March 31: Ivanka Trump said on Instahgram, “I love my father, and I love my country. Today, I am pained for both.”

    Judge Juan Merchan set the next in-person hearing for December 4, 2023 in New York City; the trial date is set for March 2024.
