Timeline  of  Important  Dates

Ukraine Independence Day August 24
Prior  Historical  Events
  • 1991 Aug 24: Ukraine declared its independence, becoming the second-largest European country after Russia.
  • 1991 December 26: Formal dissolution of the U.S.S.R., resulting in the abolition of the Soviet federal govern-ment, independence of the Soviet Union's republics, and creation of the Russian Federation.
  • 2014 Feb-March: Russia invaded and subsequently annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.

  • 2019 April 18: Special Counsel Robert Mueller released a redacted version of "The Report On The Investiga-tion Into Russian Interference In The 2016 Presidential Election" to the public; the events and investigation earned the popular name The 'RussiaGate' Scandal.
  • 2019 May 20: President Trump ordered the State Department to recall U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch from her post in Ukraine, months before her scheduled departure, "after months of complaints from allies outside the administration, including his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, that she was undermining him abroad and obstructing efforts to persuade Kyiv to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden".
  • 2019 July 25: President Trump used a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to pressure the recently-elected leader to pursue an investigation that Trump believed would deliver potential political dirt on one of his possible challengers in 2020. President Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden's son, reportedly pressing eight times in a single phone call for Zelenskyy to work with Trumps attorney, Rudy Giuliani. Listening in on Trump's July 25 phone call were: Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council; Jennifer Williams, U.S. State Dept. advisor on European & Russian affairs; and Charles Kupperman, Trump's deputy national security adviser.
  • 2019 Fri Oct 11: Career diplomat Marie Yovanovitch testified before the House impeachment investigators.
  • 2019 Tue Oct 29: Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a White House national security official and decorated Iraq war veteran, testified to House impeachment investigators providing a first-hand account of the phone call in which President Trump pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate Democrats, including political rival Joe Biden.
  • 2019 Thu Nov 21: President Trump's former Russia adviser Fiona Hill testified in the House impeachment inquiry.

  • 2021 Jan 16: The first Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump began in the U.S. Senate; the two charges were Abuse of Power - the July 25th phone call with Ukraine President Zelenskyy - and Obstruction of Congress - refusing to comply with subpoenas for documentation and testimony.
  • 2021 Feb 5: After presentation of evidence over two weeks by members of the House Impeachment Commit-tee and a complete absence of testimony by witnesses, the Senate voted for acquittal on both impeachment articles: Article I received 48 votes for guilty and 52 votes for acquittal, and Article II received 47 votes for guilty and 53 votes for acquittal - conviction requires 67 votes.
  • 2021 Fri Jan 15: The House voted 232-197 to send a further article of impeachment against President Trump for trial in the Senate, charging Trump with inciting the deadly January 6th U.S. Capitol Riot insurrection.
  • 2021 Mon Jan 25: House impeachment prosecutors read aloud the new article of impeachment against former President Trump to the Senate chamber.
  • 2021 Tue Feb 9: The second Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump began in the U.S. Senate; again, there was no testimony by witnesses.
  • 2021 Sat Feb 13: The Senate voted for acquittal on a vote of 57-43; seven Republicans joined all Democrats to convict, but it was again far from the two-thirds threshold required.

    Invasion
  • 2022 Thu Feb 10: Russia began military exercises in the Black Sea and Belarus, stoking fears of preparations for an attack on Ukraine.
  • 2022 Mon Feb 21: In a long, rambling speech espousing an anti-communist, starkly nationalistic view of history, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his decision to recognize two separatist territories of eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, as 'independent' states - a likely prelude to the annexation of these areas by Russia. Tom Nichols, writer at The Atlantic Magazine, said that “Putin has now affirmed that he refuses to accept the outcome of the Cold War.”
