"The  War  of  The  Worlds"
           | synopsis & history |            |      |
“No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.”
— opening lines of 'The War of The Worlds' novel by H.G. Wells
Synopsis

Two unauthorised serializations were published in the United States prior to the publication of the novel. The first version was published in the New York Evening Journal between December 1897 and January 1898; the story was published as "Fighters From Mars: or, The War of The Worlds", which changed the location of the story to a New York setting. The second version changed the story to the area around Boston, and was published by the Boston Post, also in 1898; the story was published as "Fighters From Mars: or, The War of The Worlds In and Near Boston". Both pirated versions of the story were followed by "Edison's Conquest of Mars" [serialization 1898, book 1947] by science journalist Garrett P. Serviss [1851-1929].

  | While on a fishing vacation, a scientist named Forrester witnesses a large object fall from the sky; after a while, the cylinder opens and space aliens exit and kill a welcoming party and shut down local power. Soldiers surround the crash site as other such landings are reported around the world; the aliens defeat the military with a heat ray. Forrester and a girl hide in a farmhouse, then manage to sneak away undetected. Forrester brings a Martian camera and tissue samples to his lab at Pacific Tech; the lab is destroyed by looters and the girl gets separated. Forrester searches for the girl in several Los Angeles churches; he finds her and just as the space aliens attack the church, the machines collapse; Forrester concludes that the invaders' weakness was inability to survive Earthian germs.
