Will  Rogers,  Jr.  [1911-93]
William Vann Rogers - generally known as Will Rogers, Jr. - was born in October 1911 in New York City; he grew up in Beverly Hills, California and at the family ranch in Pacific Palisades; after graduating from Stanford, he published a local newspaper in Beverly Hills; he was a member of R.O.T.C. but did not enlist in the U.S. Army until June 1942; he was commissioned and led a tank battalion. He served as Congressman from District 16, then in San Jose, and resigned in May 1944, returning to the Army, where he served with Patton in Europe. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star and was discharged in March 1946. Will Rogers, Jr. was politically active after The War, while working as an actor and radio host, from 1949 to 1958, when he retired to a ranch in Tubac, Arizona; he suffered severe health problems late in life, and committed suicide at age 81 in July 1993.
