Winnie, The Live Bear [1914-34]
A young veterinarian named Harry Colebourn enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1914; on his way to the training camp, he saw a black bear cub for sale at the White River, Ontario train station; he purchased the cub for $20 and named her 'Winnie' for his home town of Winnipeg. The Fort Garry Horse Brigade soon adopted the bear as mascot, and smuggled the animal to their next posting, in England. When orders arrived for a move to the frontlines in France, Lt. Colebourn arranged for the bear to be cared for by the London Zoo. The bear became very popular with the public, so Colebourn left the bear at the zoo when the war ended. Young Christopher Robin was also a fan of the bear, and renamed Edward Bear, his scruffy teddy bear, in honor of Winnie. The rest, as they say is history. Winnie lived a long and happy life at the London Zoo until she died in 1934.
