“A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute [that] it begins to rain.”
Mark Twain [1835-1910]

“The benefit of appointing a hawkish central banker is the increased inflation-fighting credibility
that such an appointment brings.” — former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke

“Every [other] central banker in the world pays attention to credit growth, but not in the U.S.”
— Marc Faber

“Men called bankers we shall hate, for they enrich themselves while doing nothing.”
Greek philosopher Aristotle [384-322 B.C.E.], in his "Politics"

nbsp         Money in Ancient Times was coins and bars made of precious metal, although much of commerce was a matter of barter. The Phoenicians [2500-64 B.C.E.] invented banks because it was too dangerous to ship tons of gold - losses from pirates or storms were devastating. So they invented 'letters of credit' that were easily delivered to their various outposts, documents to be traded for gold, etc. in storage at those locations. Banking in Medieval Times was also centered on international trade, especially the Bardi and Peruzzi and Medici families of Florence.

The new merchant class of the 17th Century began depositing gold with London (and other) goldsmiths for safekeeping and the goldsmiths began issuing paper 'specie' that could be traded for gold on demand. The Bank of England originated the permanent issue of banknotes in 1695; by the beginning of the 19th Century, a bankers' clearing house was established in London to allow multiple banks to clear transactions. The Rothschilds pioneered international finance on a large scale, financing the purchase of shares in the Suez canal for the British government in 1875.

Banking was generally a service to governments and commercial investors (i.e. Wall Street) until A.P. Giannini [] created the Bank of Italy to serve individual workers and small businesses in 1904; that enterprise grew to become the international behemoth Bank of America by 1945.

Not much has changed since then except as to form:
          • In 1957, American Express issued the first of its charge cards, which are different in that they require full payment at the end of each month; American Express issued the first embossed plastic cards in 1959.
          • The first credit card system was launched in 1958 by Bank of America in Fresno, California; the name was changed to Visa in 1976.
          • The ancestor of MasterCard was born in 1966 when a group of banks established the Interbank card system to compete with BankAmericard; it received a significant boost when Citibank joined them in 1969 and merged its own Everything Card, launched in 1967; the name was changed to Master Charge in 1969 and to MasterCard in 1978.
          • The first successful A.T.M.s (automated teller machines) began operation in May 1968 in England and Sweden.

The first home banking service was offered to consumers in December 1980 by United American Bank of Knoxville, Tennessee; the bank partnered with Radio Shack to produce a secure custom modem for its TRS-80 computer that allowed bank customers to access their account information securely; thousands of customers paid $25-$30 per month for bill pay, account balance checks, and loan applications, as well as game access, budget & tax calculators, and daily newspapers.
Four of New York's major banks (Citibank, Chase Manhattan, Chemical Bank, and Manufacturers Hanover) followed in 1981 by offering home banking services, using the videotex system, which was a commercial failure except in France (where millions of Minitel videotex terminals were given out by the telecom provider).
In 1995, Wells Fargo was the first U.S. bank to add online banking services to its website; by 2000, 80% of U.S. banks offered e-banking; by 2009, 47% of Americans used online banking; and by 2018, the number of digital banking users in the U.S. reached approximately 61 percent.
          Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency, invented in 2008 to circumvent the legal and moral restrictions of banking. {The entire cryptocurrency scheme is a 'financial bubble' inevitably destined to implode.}

A  Few  Important  Dates

  • 2022 June: Events are being labeled 'The Crypto Winter'.
  • 2022 Mon Nov 14: The F.T.X. crypto exchange's collapse and bankruptcy caused further damage: Bitcoin dropped to $16,500 and is now down 65 percent in 2022; analysts say that it could drop below $10,000.

    Books  About  Banking

Mystery of Banking book by Murray N. Rothbard  "The Mystery of Banking" [1983, rev 2008] by Murray N. Rothbard [1926-95],
2008 Preface by Douglas E. French, 2008 Foreword by Joseph T. Salerno

The first eleven chapters of the book unravels how the central bank operates to create money through the fractional-reserve banking system and how this leads to inflation of the money supply and a rise in over-all prices in the economy; subsequent five chapters cover the historical mystery of how an inherently inflationary institution like central banking, which is destructive of the value of money and, in the extreme case of hyperinflation, of money itself, came into being and was accepted as essential to the operation of the market economy
