  | "The Video Master's Guide To Donkey Kong" [1983] by Steve Sanders "Now, a champion reveals tricks and twists to boost your score ... you'll go ape!" Bantam Books mass pb [2/83] out of print/scarce |
The cutthroat competition for the world champion at playing Donkey Kong lands the winner in the Guinness Book of World Records. In the early 1980s, legendary Billy Mitchell
set a Donkey Kong record that stood for almost 25 years. Title-holder Mitchell and challenger Steve Wiebe were filmed in 2006, as their scores toggled back and forth.
Steve Wiebe regained the title on 20 September 2010 with 1,064,500 points. Hank Chien achieved the world record with 1,068,000 points in January 2011.
In late 2017, it was discovered that all of Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong records of over one million points were fraudulent: Mitchell's video footage was made using the MAME
emulator, which allows players to use save states; his video game world records were expunged. On 12 September 2019, Mitchell dumped a 156-page 'evidence package'
in an attempt to prove his innocence, which was accompanied by a threat of legal action against Guinness World Records and the Twin Galaxies scoreboard
if they don't retract 'defamatory statements' against him and reinstate his expunged video game high score world records.
Right now the record stands at 1,272,700 Points, accomplished by John McCurdy on 17 March 2021.
  | "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" [Picturehouse/New Line Cinema Aug 2007]
The filmmakers set out to document the world of video game competition; by the time production ended, they had shot over 300 hours of video, so they decided to edit a film around the Mitchell-Wiebe contest, producing this 79-minute work. Written, directed & filmed by Seth Gordon; music by Craig Richey; featuring , Mark Alpiger, Adam Wood, Walter Day (World's Video), author Steve Sanders, Steven Krogman, Robert Mruczek (Twin Galaxies), Amanda MacKay, Doris Self, Todd Rogers, Brian Kuh, Zack Hample, Barbara Mitchell, Jon Farley; Nicole, Sandra, Ryan, Jillian, and Derek Wiebe; Paul Pitkin, Mike Thompson, Evelyn Mitchell, Mark Wright, Sam Haynes, Andrew Vogt, Greg Bond, Roy Shildt, Dwayne Richard, Perry Rodgers, John Webber, Justine Barker, Joel Hedge, Donald Hayes, Craig Glenday, Jon Jamshid, Steve L. "Fallout" was a kind of successor and homage to "Wasteland" [1988] and became a huge success, spawning multiple game sequels over the next two decades;
the end-of-the-world scenarios take place about 100 years after a war with China in a retro-futuristic, back-to-the-1950s ethos that has the Americans depicted
as super-patriotic McCarthyites who even annexed Canada just to be on the safe side.

"Black Myth: Wukong" video game [released 8/2024]
China's first major video game quickly posted huge numbers on Steam – in the first 24 hours of release, it became the most-played single-player game on Steam and the second-most-played game on the platform overall – but also came under fire for allegedly trying to censor players; single-player video game based on the classical Chinese tale "Journey To The West" [circa 1592] which is about the monkey warrior king Son Wukong. Developer Game Science sold 10 million copies in 83 hours, making it one of the fastest-selling games ever; Black Myth turned profitable on day 1 and made $450 million in its first three days. Why are some people mad? IGN reported on sexism and toxic culture at Game Science in November; then, before launch, the game’s marketing team instructed livestreamers to avoid mentioning “feminist propaganda, fetishization, COVID-19” or “China’s industry policies, opinion, news, etc.” in their gameplay reviews - which predictably backfired: for example, an 8-hour Twitch stream of Black Myth, titled “COVID-19 Isolation Taiwan (Is A Real Country) Feminism Propaganda” garnered more than 300,000 views • official gamesite •
