During the years in prison, May began writing. In 1875 his first known story was published. However, not until 1892, when 'Winnetou I' appeared in a book edition, did he achieve success with his writing.
A solo-trip in 1889 took Karl May via the Near Orient and Ceylon all the way to Sumatra, Indonesia. On his return, he visited Egypt, where he met his first wife and a couple of friends, and traveled there together.

During the 1960s & 1970s, the East German film studio D.E.F.A. made Marxist Westerns starring the Yugoslav hunk Gojko Mitic, sometimes billed as
Goiko Mititch or Georg Mitic. The socialist premise was that the heroic Native Americans were being exploited by the capitalist ranchers & cowboys and by
the fascist U.S. Army. Mitic began in small parts in 1963 and progressed to lead actor by 1970; by 2002, he was portraying an older Winnetou
