"Cowboys are all right, but they need a good laundering, most of the time." "All the crookedness ain't outside the law . . . the real fine work begins on the inside and stays there."
On writing Westerns: “There has to be a woman, but not much of a one.
A good horse is much more important.” — Frederick Schiller Faust
— author Max Brand
— author Max Brand
Frederick Schiller Faust was born 29 May 1892 in Seattle, Washington. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he began to write prolifically. He joined the Canadian Army in 1915, but deserted the next year and went to New York City, where he began selling stories to the 'pulp' magazines. Faust tried to enlist in 1917 when the United States joined World War I, but was turned down. He continued to write for the pulps, especially Street & Smith’s weekly Western Story Magazine, often with two serials and a short novel in a single issue, published under various pen names; the pen name 'Max Brand' is the best known.
Faust married Dorothy Schillig in 1917, and the couple had three children. In 1921 he had a severe heart attack, and for the rest of his life suffered from chronic heart disease. In 1925, the family moved to Europe, renting a villa in Florence, Italy. He continued to write furiously, and was 'broken-hearted' that his pulp work was successful and his poetry (for which he used his real name) was a critical and commercial failure.
Due to the political tensions in Europe, Faust and his family returned to the United States in 1938, settling in Hollywood, where he worked as a scriptwriter for a number of film studios. He was paid $3,000 a week (roughly a year's pay for an ordinary worker), and made further big bucks from the Dr. Kildare franchise at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios.
When World War II broke out, Faust – even though he was over 50 years old and had a chronic heart condition – managed to get a job as a battlefield correspondent, and was killed by shrapnel in Italy on 12 May 1944.
Faust wrote more than 500 novels and over 400 short stories & novellas using twenty pseudonyms, including George Owen Baxter, George Challis, Evan Evans, John Frederick, Frederick Frost, David Manning & Peter Morland.
His works have been made into 80 movies, including the popular Dr. Kildare series and the Destry remakes.

Dr. Kildare
Max Brand wrote short stories & novels in many genres. His 1936 tale "Internes Can't Take Money" established the characters of Dr. Kildare and his mentor,
cranky Dr. Gillespie, about whom Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios made a series of popular Dr. Kildare movies from 1937 to 1942, with novelizations
by Brand and others. WMGM-AM in New York City broadcast a weekly radio series from February 1950 to August 1951. NBC-TV broadcast 190 episodes
of a weekly TV series starring Richard Chamberlain & Raymond Massey from 1961 to 1966, which included paperback novelizations of several episodes.
Those books are all mostly out of print; whatever is available in print and on DVD is gradually being coded here.
